Hey guys,
If you took part in GID8 and havent sent your entry in yet, please send the following to fos2k4@gmail.com ...
List of everyone's name who was on your team, or just you if there was no team
Your game's name
URL to your .plan about the GID
Description of the game
If you're not sure what to write for the description, have a look at www.gameinaday.com/entries.shtml for the past entries.
Also, big thanks to Michael Lehenbauer for sending in an entry without needing prompting, thats gotta be a first ;-)

Its kinda a shame really. Craig was the only regular taking part, so for everyone else taking part it was their first GID. Which meant it was nothign like what it usually is, so not really a good introduction to GID for those guys. Hopefully they all still had fun and will be back for GID9 when we can really rock the house :)

No worries matey. You didnt miss much, half the regulars had flu which coincendtally meant that there was a severe lacking in programmers. NinjaBee and assorted friends were in fact the only people with programmers. The other GIDers were all artists trying to code :)Its kinda a shame really. This flu sucks, EVERYONE has it - it seems. Maybe it's like that virus in Snowcrash that only affects programmers ;)

I didn't forget. I was curled up in a little ball ping-ponging between sleeping and drinking chicken broth.

GID9 will hopefully see everybody back and not ill.
T.
Edit: Since everybody was ill and missed it, if anyone still wants to do GID8, drop by the channel and just do it. I'll take entries for GID8 up til Friday.

Hahaha. Yep. I'm at the stage now where if someone tells me they're *not* ill im surprised. GID9 will hopefully see everybody back and not ill.

Too bad I missed the spectacle of all the artists trying to code, though. =D

I'm not ill (well, not physically) but I decided at the last minute to just relax and work on one of my other projects. I want to finish what I've got going before I jump into another GID. That and I got a new electronic drumset on Friday so I was a little... distracted. =)Too bad I missed the spectacle of all the artists trying to code, though. =D

Not enough programmers... too many artists running around with nothing to do... this is the opposite of usual, right?

Yeah, I always feel it's the other way around, too. But then, I'm a programmer. I get so jealous of artists sometimes....

No way. I'm having to write up lame game treatments for uni at the moment that are based around a game with microbes... its too similar. My head will explode!Plus, someone will just wanna do a game about snot and monkeys flinging poo. hehe

Ahhh ... fond memories of IGC ;-)
@Bob,
By the way, why do you always put a bazillion blank lines before signing your name ? Been wondering that for a while ...

I'll see what my schedule permits. I actually think that I may have time during the week. It's from Friday until mid-January that I'll either be found dead or convicted of murder for being in close-quarters with twenty of my favorite filmmaking friends for weeks on end in a mountain cabin.

I dont mean to change the subject, but quick question. Im reading how some of you guys are specifically programmars, from my point of view that would get tedious, frustrating and would get somewhat boring after awhile. I''m guessing some of you have other jobs, is programming just a pastime? I guess I wouldn't really know, I'm more of a 3d guy.

You should probably start a new thread in a more appropriate forum with that question.

Is there any specific rules against starting with a certain amount of base code? For instance using the FPS version of the Torque engine. I have an idea of a game I was going to prototype using the FPS code to jump start it. Also, the game idea I have is one I have been toying with for weeks on paper. Is that against the rules too? Maybe I will wait for the next one. I want to try a quick one for this round, but not if it is not in the spirit of things.
BTW, when I was in school I needed a project to show case my talents for a technical exhibition for potential employers. So I threw together a simple game over the weekend using a libary I had built for building tile based games under DOS. The game was a simple timer based game where you had to find a bomb on the screen that was randomly placed somewhere. Each time you found the bomb the next round gave you ten seconds less than you had before. The minimum time it gave you was 10 seconds. If you won, a screen came up saying you saved the day. If you did not find it, another screen came up that said BOOM! Every once in a while the program would crash due to a memory leak. So I scripted a DOS batch file that would restart the program when it crashed. I put the program on display at one the workstations and put my name under it. One of the teachers shut it off, because they thought it was a commercial game. I guess they could not fathom some student could use good textures and actually write a game!
Thanks,
Frank

Holy poop, I thought this was a joke when I saw it. GID is a rather intimidating prospect. It could be a great way to jump start the coding for certain ideas. I am going to use the FPS demo in Torque to create a Hang Man game by Friday. I decided I am going to do it and see where it gets me. I started with a fresh copy of 1.3 code of the engine and just compiled it and built a main menu screen. I am running under Linux so it may take a bit to get it compiled for Windows if anyone else would like to see it when I am done. Got a day job, so hours spent will be well below 24. Wish me luck,
Frank

Sorry I missed GID8 this past weekend, had a lot of personal/family issues this weekend that kept me from participating.
