Comments on Linux support for AMD64s

I'm planning a major upgrade to my PC, and since I want to use Linux for development, I thought I'd post here and ask the experts! I'm worried about hardware support for modern graphics cards, motherboards and AMD64 processors in Linux, so if anyone has experience with this running under Fedora or Ubuntu, please let me know how well it works for you.

I'm looking at:

Hiya! I'm a 64-bit Linux user, so I do at least have some idea how well
it supports some things :)

Debian for AMD64 detected *all* my hardware right off the CD.
It's really just a tiny "springboard" installer with core networking,
all sorts of drivers installed and some basic programs, but even my
TV-card was supported. Linux on 64-bit doesn't have the driver problem
you'd find on Windows; when you recompile a kernel, you recompile
the drivers. Pre-packaged works well, too.

I also use an NForce 3 chipset (however you spell it), and nVidia
graphics cards. No problems there, as NVidia provide 64-bit drivers.

The 6600GT is what I want too, after much comparing of data.
Win32 drivers are iffy at the moment, and I dunno about Linux drivers.
The latter seem to be at a lower version number than the former.
Take that however you want it. A nice, new set of drivers is expected
over xmas (and may be in beta now - might be possible to find them,
if so).

Everything you listed there looks cool, and those Canadian prices are
nice..you lucky sod :)

The only downer right now:
I bought Torque today, after having wanted it for a long time. The dollar
was cheap, too, so I paid about $2 more than GTA:SA cost over here.
Bad news is that it won't compile with Debian AMD64 and GCC2.x
or 3.3. I'll post about that after this.
