Disappointing endings to games ( warning discussion of HL2 )

How can someone spend 5 years making a game with a story and create such a completely crappy ending.
I mean it is no better than the original Doom ending with the vertically scrolling STILL image!!!!!!
I mean they go to all this trouble to try and create characters that you care about, quality voice acting, and a story ( which ) I thought was no better than a James Bond movie or the last Matrix movie that was just an excuse to string together a bunch of action sequences.
I think the ending was just slack and a complete pandering to set up a sequel. After all that you get the equivelent of the end of the original Doom!
Man Valve was completely LAZY and dropped the ball on the ending for sure.

I think in many ways this is going to hurt sales for the Xbox 2. First they made people wait an entire year after H2 was done, then they had a transistion ending in the game, now you are not only going to have to buy another $50 game, but a $150-$200 game system to play it. This makes for a nasty combination. It might just be enough for people to throw up their arms and say not again. I know two other owners of Xboxes. All 3 of use are not intending on buying another Xbox. If there was more closure to H2 then it might not be so bad. But if you have discussions like this occuring with people split on their feelings that means you may have just alienated %50 of your customers. Not a good thing.
Like Scott said about what if they had the X-Wings about to attack the Death Star. But oh, BTW if you want to see the next one you have to buy some hardware to see it as well.

I think part of the problem for these dissapointing endings is the expectations from previous incarnations of the game. In H1 you get hints of other rings as you play through. You also are shown that the war against the covenant is not over. In H2 the hints are so strong that when you get to the end you are made to believe there is going to be another level right now. If the hints were were not as strong. Say only show up to the climax. Then you would think later well what about master chief, or what about cortana, or what next. In a way H2 showed too much at the end which made you believe there was another level or two to play. Then when there was not, you were pissed off.
