GID8 - Theme suggestions wanted
by Tom Bampton · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 11/17/2004 (8:45 pm) · 39 replies
Current thinking is GID8 will happen on the 3rd weekend of December, which would be the 18th and 19th. This may still change, but seeing as selecting the theme is always problematic, I thought I'd get the ball rolling early.
So ... any theme suggestions ?

Hmm. That would be the obvious choice. Seems a bit too sensible for GID ;-)

Ha! I didn't even realize GID had gotten its own forum!

Generic enough to make a xmas game, open enough to make something totally wicked

Might be nice to try a wacky cross of two different things, like the Cash Cow theme. Something that can turn out a lot of different games, but keep an overall humour to all of them that use it.
Keep em coming :)

Wait, no...
That's the same weekend that we begin shooting for our next film (at least that's if schedules work out). If we don't end up doing production work that weekend, then I'll be entering.
EDIT:
Just thought I'd put in a vote for snow. If T2D is going to be used by the EA's that got it for GiD7, then it could lead to some amazing "snowy" particle effects, too!

Re: the date ... if more people cant make it then can, it may change to the previous weekend. We'll see on that one.

Snow does leave a lot of options. I like it, too. I still think it'd be good to combine it with something else (preferably nothing yellow or brown, which has been featured in many GID ideas that were fortunately thrown away before they started ;-)..)Re: the date ... if more people cant make it then can, it may change to the previous weekend. EDIT:
Here's a question. Will Torque 2D be made available again in EA release for GiD8 movers and shakers?

Snow Fort - a RTS-action title where you not only plow up your snow fort, but try to snowball the enemy into extinction. Actually, I kind of like the idea of that.EDIT:

EDIT:
actually, snowball wouldn't be too bad, because it could be taken to mean either a ball of snow, or a situation that "snowballs"
"Slippery Slope" might be another good one.

Only the programming has to be done that day, right?

Are we allowed to use art that we made before?Only the programming has to be done that day, right?

You'll have to wait and see on T2D/GID8.
Niko,
Re-using anything is fine. We like to think of GID as a compressed form of the entire dev cycle. If you were starting a full project and you had existing code or art that was suitable, you'd still use it, so thus you would in GID too. In fact, in some GIDs, a week of engine coding and drawing of art has occured the week before GID just to provide said code and art to reuse ;-) However, it must be said, the expectations of what you produce increase with what you reuse. For example, expectations of 21-6's entry were extremely high because they started with an existing game and the largest GID team yet, and they delivered.
Theme: Slippery Snow Penguins ? :)

Sounds good. I just have the same fears that people who got it for GiD7 had: learning a new system PLUS making a game.

If we do something along those lines again then we'll try and make sure people get it in advance so they can learn it first. We did send the GID build of T2D as soon as we could, but it just wasnt ready until Friday for various reasons.
