New forum areas: resources, bugs

Howdy folks,

Well... the response to the RTS Starter Kit so far has been awesome. Thanks to everyone here. 220 posts in 5 days... that's more than TSE got at first!

In order to keep pace with the growth and keep the forums organized, I've created a couple new forum sub-sections.

The RTS Starter Kit Resources forum should be used for submitting resources and other contributions to the Starter Kit. Thanks in advance to all who will post resources there. I've been amazed at what we've already seen. Awesome work guys. I love to see this "world domination through collaboration" stuff. If we keep helping each other out, we'll all end up with kickass projects in no time.

The RTS Starter Kit bugs forum should be used to submit bug reports. Please standard bug reporting procedures, explaining how to consistently reproduce the bug, being as detailed as possible, and offering fixes whenever you can!

Thanks again for all the support and work so far everyone. This community freakin owns. :)

Note: we didn't use the normal resource or bug tracking systems because they're a bit of a pain to get set-up properly for private access, which we need for the RTS. So, using dedicated forums is a good stop-gap solution that provides a decent level of organization, quickly.

@Josh/Ben/GG: I know you guys are doing the best you can with the very limited time you have, but as folks get more involved with the RTS Pack, we'll be posting larger and larger resources (they are already going to two and three posts).

If you've never tried to cut and paste code from the forums before, I'd suggest you try it (but only if you're heavily into masochism/self-punishment).

I for one would hate to see the momentum we've built up already start to peter out due to frustration trying to implement each other's resources/code snippits. Do you think it might be possible to get GG to allocate some time in the near future to that protected .zip file download concept we've bounced about?

I will try, but Rick is really, really busy with important stuff, so I don't want to promise anything. I know cut/paste from the forums can be a pain, and I don't want to impede progress here either. In the future, if you have a resource that you want to provide files with, you can email me with the appropriate file (limit 10mb) and I can stick it up on a site. It won't be secure, but as long as the link isn't given out, it'll be alright until we get an actual resource section.

The other option is to use the normal resource stuff, but only provide patch files. However, creating a patch file and having people apply it is even more of a pain, at least for more inexperienced users, as cutting stuff from the forums. So, it seems to me that the forum is the best stop-gap, especially if we supplement it with downloadable .zips when appropriate.

Well, I'm sure that most of us can provide hosting of various .zip files on our own...I personally was just worried about the security aspect as you mentioned. Are you guys comfortable with providing source code segments on unsecure sites (anon access), as long as we agree as "RTS Pack licensees" to not be passing links around?

Obviously, we won't be posting up the installers, or full copies of the source, etc.

Hopefully most resources can just use a forum post. However, for larger resources where a .zip is necessary or more convenient, then we'll just have to deal with the insecurity until we get proper enhancements into the resource system.

I would prefer though if any .zips were hosted here, so we can take them offline if we see invalid users dl'ing it frequently. Emailing me/us with a .zip and waiting for it to get posted shouldn't be any more of a delay than waiting for us to approve a normal resource.

Don't mean to get too hung up on this. The whole point here is just to provide a relatively easy way for people to post resources, but without ending up with the entire RTS Starter Kit code being given away to non-owners. I think this set-up is a good stop-gap, it's more secure than doing normal resources, and it's less of a pain than requiring people to do patches only.
