How do i add marble blast to my sons user account applic. folder

by Mark Heese · in Marble Blast · 11/15/2004 (6:31 pm) · 20 replies

I have created a user account for my 5 year old son on my new iMac. I have a simplified finder for him and only have a few applications available to him. I have created this account for him under the accounts icon in my system preferences. It asks me to check off the applications that I want to allow him access to. The ones I check off will appear in his applications folder when he opens his account. However, all the applications I have checked appear in his folder, except Marble Blast Gold. When I go back into his account I see that the checkmark that I placed beside Marble Blast Gold has automatically disappeared. I've tried several times with different combos of applications and it seems impossible to get it there unless I take off the limitations and give him full access to everything (which defeats the purpose of giving him his own account). It's his favorite application or game and I really want it in his account, so he doesn't have to play with it in my account and I risk him messing things up.

can anyone give some advice?

Uh..........I have no idea.

I am sending a report of this to our mac and marble blast coders. Thanks for pointing it out, I hadn't even realized how slick the simplified finder is, I'll have to tell my mom about it so she can set up something like this for my dad.

He gets a bit overwhelmed by the complexity of the computer. :)

Update: seems that this is a problem with all Torque games, plus Gish (which is not made in Torque, so that seems strange). We shall see what we can come up with.

I've figured it out, although it is more of a backdoor solution. I made a copy of the game on my desktop, then dragged it to the Shared folder in the Users file. Anything put into the Shared folder will appear in every users Shared folder. For the Simple Finder Users (such as my son, the Shared folder is one of the few mandatory items displayed in his Dock). So I logged into his user desktop and found it in his Shared folder, then dragged it to his applications folder. Strange that this is the only way i could get it there, as opposed to simply checking it off when setting up my son's account.

Thanks for your feedback, and please post a thread if you figure it out the proper way.

I am glad you found a workaround, I'll post if any progress is made on this.

I have the same problem, not only wiyh this game, but with other games and applications like qarkxpress etc.
the backdoor solution helps with all of them, only you loose a lot of disk space if you have to doble all your programs.
Couldn't it be a problem of the new imac?

Has this issue been resolved yet? I face the same problem, I cannot select Marble Blast for limited accounts created for my children. Shouldn't there be a patch of some sort for this game already?

@Frederic: there is a solution to this, but it requires replacing a file inside Marble Blast. If you email me, I can forward you the file and instructions for installing it. alexs@garagegames.com

Sorry I'm late to the game on this one guys. I just got my new iMac and am going through the obligatory post-Windows deprogramming and learning about all this cool new stuff I just got. My kids absolutely love this game. But I don't seem to be smart enough to figure out how to make it work from their "parental controls" managed user accounts. They have to run it from my login, which is not altogether cool. It won't let me give them permission to the app, even when I dragged a copy of the whole MarbleBlast Gold folder to the machine's Shared directory. Says something about how the app does not work with the limitations I've selected. I'm feeling very ignorant here with my new, much-smarter-than-I-am Mac.

Thanks loads in advance for any wisdom or guidance anyone can provide me.

...Ken.

It is a known bug in the bundled version of Marble Blast. Email me and I will send you the solution. alexs@garagegames.com

I tried the new fix, but it does not work for me. Has anyone else had success? I still get the same behavior as before.

It has succeeded for most everyone previously, but lately a couple people have reported it failing. Could you tell me what kind of Mac you have, and what operating system version it came with?

I have a G4 iBook that came with OS 10.3, which I later upgraded to Tiger 10.4.

Alright, you are the second person who recieved this error on 10.3. The other person specifically had 10.3.8.

We are currently looking into what could cause this additional bug, but running into some difficulties because we do not have access to a computer that actually came with Marble Blast and that version of the OS pre-installed, so it is difficult to tell whether an incorrect version may have been shipped with that bundle, or if it is some other issue.

If you could select your copy of the Marble Blast application, choose "Get Info" from the File ment, and tell us the "Version" info, that would really help us in tracking down the problem.

MarbleBlast Gold is a fabulous game. The family really enjoys it.

We are having the same problem with parental controls. The app was not appearing in the list of apps which I could select for a limited user. Even using the Locate... button to navigate to the app, the system popped up a message stating that MarbleBlast Gold is not compatible with the limitations I have selected. AppleCare was nice enough to listen to my problem, but was unable to resolve it.

We are running 10.4.2 on an iMac G5 which came with the app bundled. Precisely, the app came bundled with 10.3.5, which was the default configuration of the computer. We did an "erase and install" to install Tiger, and then re-installed MarbleBlast Gold from the original iMac DVD. Everything works fine on the admin account, and on other non-limited accounts, but not for the limited account.

Details: Admin was unable to select this app in the list of allowed apps for a limited user.
Then: We downloaded your fix (updated Info.plist). (By the way, the name that Safari downloaded was 8052.Info.plist.xml, so I had to rename the file before installing it.)
Now: Admin can select the app in the list of allowed apps, but when limited user tries to run the app, it says...
You do not have permission to open the application "MarbleBlast Gold".

The old Info.plist said that the version was 1.5.0. The updated Info.plist tells me it is version 1.5.4. The Finder's Get info... tells me the app is version 1.5.4.

Has anyone else seen this same behavior? What can we do about it? Thanks.

Alex,
My problem is the same as the one reported above by Mark Abajian.

I'm having similar problems with Orbz. It doesn't appear in the list of apps in the parental controls. Trying to locate it, I get a message saying " "Orbz" does not work with the limitations you have selected".

I'll try the workaround. See if that helps.

Despite installing the updated plist file on an iMac OS X with Tiger (upgraded from Panther, which came with the unit), Marble Blast still doesn't show up in my son's Limited account. We see the same behaviour as noted above!
