Nvidia, win2k server on a dell laptop

Man of man what a royal pain it is to install standard NVIDIA drivers on a DELL laptop!

I just spent the better part of 1.5 days trying to get the beta NVIDIA drivers (70.41) installed on my laptop. Nothing would take, every time I did the driver cleaner bit and tried to install the drivers via the setup.exe it would fail. It said it installed it and asked to reboot, but rebooted into VGA mode :(

After many rounds of being pummeled into the mat I decided to change my strategy and enter SAFE MODE, this allowed me to be on the defensive and wait for the opportune time to counter attack. win2k launched a ferocious attack which I took in stride and then went in for the kill attacking with relentless aggression looking for the one hit knock out....

after expanding and renaming all of the .dl_, .ex_ and .sy_ files in the C:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\70.41 directory I proceeded to copy each .dll into the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory and the .sys files into C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory. I also placed a copy of the nvwiz.exe into the C:\WINNT\ directory and rebooted.

I watch the LCD as win2k booted hoping that my battle was victorious! 20 seconds, then 30, 40, 50 a minute then 2 minutes passed and the OS was still booting, what did I do? did I render my laptop useless? would I have to boot into SAFE MODE and surrender?

Finally after 3 minutes of sweating and cursing win2k finally booted, checking the display properties shows that my battle was VICTORIOUS! 70.41 drivers are installed!

Oh man, that sounds like trouble. Have you tested various 3D apps to make sure it's running OK?

If you read the notes on the nVidia site it says that their reference drivers don't support laptops. You have to wait on Dell to update their drivers (which unfortunately can lag).

I hope your hack/workaround works =)

Matt,

Also on the same site they indicate why :) the only 2 reasons why they are not supported is due to the power down and suspend modes of laptops. Other than that everything else is the same between the drivers.

I have done my home work :)

You can go here to get modified drivers to work on Dell laptops.

I believe you get the driver from Nvidia then add the new inf from here to get working drivers. Works well for me for the last several years.

Ron,

There were recently v67.20 (WHQL) mobile drivers release on the nVidia registered-developer workstation site. I've got these running on my Dell Precision M60 which previously would not work with nVidia reference drivers. The new v67.20 works flawlessly without modification.
