Site Color Schemes

I'm experimenting with new color schemes for my website. Please comment upon the following color schemes:

www.fletchergames.com/colortest/colorb.htm
www.fletchergames.com/colortest/colorc.htm
www.fletchergames.com/colortest/colord.htm
www.fletchergames.com/colortest/colore.htm

I've switched color schemes several times in the past. It seems like no matter what color scheme I pick, there's always someone who hates it. If possible, I'd like to find a color scheme that hardly anyone hates, even if it doesn't wow anyone.

A and B are the easist to read if you are going to have a lot of text like that.

Why dont you give them the option of which they like, then? Some of the superior browsers (read: not IE) have a built in mechanism to handle this. This page has various methods for handling this:

I'm no expert, but a, c, and e are all fine by me - really don't like the other two though.

B: 1 vote
C: 1 vote
E: 1 vote

Alas, there's no clear consensus.

@James

I thought about doing something like that, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. It would take up time that I could spend doing other things. Moreover, there's not any clear standard.

For instance, I used to use a style sheet to determine the colors for my site. But Opera can't handle my style sheet for some reason. So I went aheand and search-replaced all the body tags instead.

But since you gave me that link, I'll guess I'll get to work on that on some weekend soon.

I'd still like to have a good choice for the default color though.

IE is probably going to be one of your biggest user base for almost any online website... sad but true... might as well accept it now, doing something that wont comply with IE is like shooting yourself in the foot... not trying to be harsh, just realistic.

on the other hand you can acheive the user choosing their own color schemes quite effectively (and not all that hard) in php.

None of those links work for me.

Looking at your regular site though, I would suggest loosing the borders on your tables. It's kind of rough cosmetically.

There are plenty of free sites out there that have already premade backgrounds that you can check out. heres a couple.

My website is a variation of a few different designs. You can check it out at

Although I use php in a superficial way, I think it would be too much effort have decent user customization of anything on the site. It wouldn't be that hard, but it would just be that much time I'm not spending on doing other more important things. And I have enough problems getting motivated to do any sort of programming right now anyways.

I took down the links to the "color a, b, etc." pages after I decided which color scheme to use.

Having the borders around the tables is actually one of my favorite things about the site, so I'm not going to change that unless alot of people say they don't like it.
