Is it time for a new forum?

I love Garagegames.com, it's an excellent place for us to share opinion,s tips, and help the indie movement stay alive. I do have one gripe though: why does Garagegames stick us with this horrible forum?
I don't know about anyone else, but I absolutely hate having to click the "Mark all as read" link everyday, so I know which threads have new posts the next time I visit. There is no advantage to using this forum system at all.
Please garagegames, give us an update. Even phpBB would be better than this, although Invision would be top-notch. It's very easy to implement these forum systems with your current login procedures.
I just feel we don't have the adequate tools to communicate effectively with one another as it is. Yes, a few years ago, these were great - but now, they are a hinderance.

I'm fine with these forums though. My only real gripe would be similar to Michaels ...
On the right in the "Whats New?" box, it has a "Forum Threads" Section which displays the 5 most recent threads, yet when you click on the "Forums Threads" link, it just takes you to General Discussion rather than a chronological order of threads. So if you were afk for a bit and 6 threads got posted, you'd only know of the last 5 and thats 6th one may slip past you.
Does anyone know of a way to see the most recent threads?

I don't think that there is anything wrong with these forums. They work just fine.

Chris: What, you don't consider "i need a teem, plez mak my game 4 me" a valuable resource??

Yeah, the .plan showing up in resources is highly annoying. I gave up trying to manually search the resources because it for every 1 resource there were 300 .plans.

Oh yes i do, my total gripe is that they dont have their own section. i hate searching through all the other "crappy" resources for them.
Come on , come on give me a section called Super Resources and throw them all in there.
=P

I would like to have sticky threads and maybe a rating system to keep good threads around. Other than that, we are pretty happy with our forum system. I hate all of those forums systems with the little flaming smileys and huge sigs, etc.
Resources have nothing to do with the forums. I do agree that the default when clicking on the Resources link should not inlcude .plans. But, it probably won't change immediately. We have a million things to do, and these things are not at the top of the list.
I certainly don't think our system is "incredibly stupid" and would think that a "skilled programmer" would have a better way of describing it than that.

I really like our forum system. I don't like most of the systems that were mentioned. It is really easy to use our forums. Subscribe only to the forums you want, then click Mark All As Read when you are done reading on a session. Next time you come, click on the Unread Posts link, and all you get are the new posts.I would like to have sticky threads and maybe a rating system to keep good threads around. I don't think we need the flaming smilies and such, but this one feature, which is absolutely necessary in the current IT industry, is a much needed addition to the GG forums.
Jeff Tunnell, please don't take offense to my comment "incredibly stupid." In the instance I mention above, yes this forum system is. Overall, I feel it serves our needs adequately. It's just that one simple feature that hinders us so much,

The main problem I have with the forum is the fact it does not keep track of which threads you view. It is an unnecessary extra click to keep track of which threads you have read and which you haven't.I don't think we need the flaming smilies and such, but this one feature, which is absolutely necessary in the current IT industry, is a much needed addition to the GG forums.

I think these forums are very clean. I don't like the "unread" posting things though. They often show up as unread when I infact have been done reading them twice before. And sometimes threads that I want to watch are not in the "unread posts" eventho they have new posts since my last visit and which are newer than the ones on the list I can access.
I look at this forum as a way of finding information fast, I really like it.
You can find almost anything in an easy way.

I don't like forums in general, I'm more of a listserv guy. But considering the diverse nature of the posts and that most require confidentiality, I don't see a listserv as a good sollution.
But as a suggestion : include a mark "forum" as read button and a better form for tracking some threads. Also, in general, make sure that members include the location in their profile. I would love to be able to track all Torque users in Rio de Janeiro.

If it IS broken, then you toss it away and find something which isn't...
Either way, you have to keep adjusting, adapting and improving...

If it's not broken then of course you fix it. How else are you going to improve? If it IS broken, then you toss it away and find something which isn't...
