3D Game Programming All In One -> shall i buy it?

by Lukas Kimme · in Torque Game Engine · 10/21/2004 (12:50 am) · 7 replies

Hello everyone,
i read about the book '3D Game Programming All In One' here on gg and I wondered what I would be able to do after reading the book. I'm new to torque (tried to become a bit familar with script, checked the editors...) and I've (quite good and many) experiences with '3d Game Studio' and I'm also experienced modelling stuff (milkshape, gmax...). I wonder if I could for example make a small rpg after reading the book.
I think I'll get much positive response for the book, but keep in mind that I'm a student and 50$ (40EUR in my case) is much money for me.

thanks for your answers
Lukas

Amazon used section oftentimes has the book for 50% savings. I look on occasion and I've seen it ranging from $22-$35.
I haven't read it myself, so I can't say for sure if it's worth it. I think it probably is for new users though, since it does compile quite a bit of documentation in one easy to find spot.

Lukas,

I have the book and enjoyed it. It will give you a good overview of the steps necessary to use Torque. The problem is, that it is limited in its explaination. When you are done with the book, you will have a good idea of how the tools work, but not necessarily how to use them to make what you want (if it is different from what the books does, which is first-person-shooter).

It is a good overview, but you will still have to dig through the forums for answers to your specific game building issues. I think the best part of the book is the explaination of how the client-server system is set-up and what to have in the models (which is also available on this site).

My results may vary from others because I have no use for vehicles, the world editor, gui editor, etc.

Thanks.

@Lukas - You may be experienced enough that you can get by with the garagegame tutorials which you have access to as you own a torque license. The author of the book is working on another book devoted to advanced scripting in torque so you may want to wait for that. Regarding RPG, it's referenced little in the book and if you've never created an RPG before you would probably do better with a book on RPG game development. I've seen a handful of books dedicated to RPG in one way or another so look around. Good luck!

Thank you all
after reading your comments I think I won't buy the book though it may help. I'll work through the gg-tutorials and hopefully I'll get somewhere. Because of amazon.com: I'm from germany and I don't have a clue what shipping would cost me.
anyway thank you all again

Shipping would cost you somewhere around 7$-12$. I payed 49.95$ and I am not very far from Germany.
But you can go at amazon, add book to your cart, select shipping method and amazon will calculate total cost for you (This sounds like a commercial for amazon) ;)

Anyway, if you are total newbie the book is almost a must it will hold your hand and guide you from very beginning all the way to the playable game (without normal AI unfortunatly) but those 850 pages will explain you a lot about making a game.

Try Amazon.de instead.

Lukas, I loved the book. For me it condensed a huge amount of the effort involved in learning the various parts of torque down into one place. It's full of great tips and detailed instruction. If you want to really enjoy your introduction to torque, I'd definitely recommend it.
