Huh, what is .DTS?

Hi guys,
Lately, I've been hearing the term .dts spring up whenever 3D models are concerned.
I know it is a format used by 3D modelers (most notably 3D Studio Max), but what is it. How does it differ from .3ds, .x, etc. etc.
What information does it save?
