Where can I download Indie updates?

by Alessandro Manotti · in Torque Game Engine · 10/13/2004 (10:43 am) · 29 replies

Hi all,
even if I bought Indie license (100$) more than one year ago, now I'm trying to use Torque.

I don't want to use engine SDK (I don't want to modify C++ files), but I wish to use Scripting.
I don't understand where can I find my environment. I have only DEMO version, but is there a place where I can download the most recent version (I think it is 1.3) already compiled for Windows XP (not demo, but my licensed version environment)?

Please help me!

Thank you!

I don't think there are any pre compiled versions of TGE, you have to download the source code through the cvs and compile it on your own.

@Alessandro Manotti:

You're misunderstanding alot here. If you don't want to dwelve into the code, then why did you purchase the SDK?

Anyway.. The Demo you have, is the newest version. It's a TEST application that comes with Torque and can be changed with scripts. That's all you have to play with if you don't want to use the actual SDK.

I think there are a lot of assumptions WHY an SDK is purchased. I had assumed that I could, as an artist, just buy the license and start scripting my own stuff and plop a bunch of my content into the game. That isn't entirely the case.

While the vast majority of the SDK owners are probably coders, there are a few like myself that really didn't want to deal with the engine code. However, after looking at the engine internally, it appears that alot of stuff is so specific that it almost requires messing with the engine.

I personally think the engine binary should be included with the SDK. Maybe it is and I am missing something. But as far as creating an engine that caters to the content providers needs (artists and designers), torque has a long way to go.

I'm not compaining or ripping on the engine (its great, and provides far more than I had expected).

@Randall:

That's the point. You need the SDK to code (and to sell, I guess) your game. If you don't want to code or even compile the source, then why buy the SDK in the first place?

The demo binary is supplied with the SDK.
With the demo comes the scripts.
You can do alot with the demo.

Can I SELL the demo? With my own content, and without purchasing a license?

With your own content, sure, you have a lic, there isnt much in the demo if you change all the content, but you guys should look at either Realm Wars

www.garagegames.com/mg/projects/realmwars/

or single player example starter kit

cleverace.home.comcast.net//

those have a lil more to offer then the tge demo as they used it as a base then added stuff

Assume that I DON'T have a license. Could I take the demo (or Realm Wars), add my own content and sell it?

This would be extremely difficult, considering the tools and documentation are within the SDK. Here are the reason I bought the SDK, in order of importance:

1) Gives me a valid license to sell whatever I create
2) Provides documentation for inserting my own content
3) Provides the tools necessary to add my own content

Notice that engine modification is nowhere on that list.

Oh ya and game beavers Beaver Patrol is another cool one (sorry no link)

No , you have to have a lic to sell anything torque

Now wait , you can sell stuff in packs, for devs, but i dont see that makeing much money.

Well then there we go. That answers Lundmarks question:

Well you are right and so is he.

If you just want to mod the current demo and not sell your mod, why buy the sdk?

You want to sell what you create in the demo so you have to pay for that right.

(kinda two differnt things there)

Hi all,

some times ago I bought a license, because I thought that was the correct way in order to create games with Torque, then selling them. I took a look to the engines available (a lot of engines: free, open source, cheap, expensive, very expensive), and Torque was a good compromise: not much expensive (100$) and with good features (about rendering, building tools, etc...). I'm an expert programmer, but I haven't enought time in order to study engine sources (C++). So a good way was using built-in scripting system.
When I bought a license, I noticed I had to recompile everything... but... why? And scripting features? And integrated tools? I think Torque should publish binary (not using demo-version!) of the software, a licensed, fully functional environment, like SDK, but already compiled (a blank enviroment, docs, already compiled updates, etc...).

Is anyone actually listening, or are we all just talking?

Who said anything about NOT selling? Nobody, not even the creator of this thread, have said such a thing (although he may not want to sell his work, we don't know). So we aren't talking about two different things at all.

Well, the creator of the thread just stated that he wants to sell his work.... so we are still only talking about one thing. It appears Alessandro is in the same kind of situation as me. And his final comments, I completely agree with:
