2 ideas from the smoldering labs of Rhi...

Here's 2 I've decided to throw out for feedback after reading Jeff's .Plan and wanting to see new types of game ideas...

my first simmering plot: a wacky ballon vehicle race, like Thanksgiving Day Parade style ballons, with teamplay; driver/navigator and 'payload specialist'. During the course you must hit predefined target zones with drops[sandbag with streamer, or some such], along with interTeam shenanagins, such as puncturing another team's ballon, etc, and of course the 'simple' task of staying afloat with ballast and gas.... Courses run from all over the world, passing famous landmarks, etc...

bubbling idea #2: for this idea I wanted each player to come away from the game environment/experience with something more tangable than a higher score. To this end I came up with a 'collector' type game. Your goal is to catch butterflies of the many numerous species to complete an album book[insert lovely GUI here in the form of a book]. This would produce a slide show affair of your captures for later viewing outside the engine enviroment. I later interpolated this idea into a safari-type game idea with taking still photos and recording moving images[avi,etc...] as a naturalist would of animal behavior. This was to curb an edge to the destructive nature of most games, imho.

...well, there they are; a few ideas. What do you think?

I like idea #2. But research and find out if it's been done. If it has, improve upon it, or do something unique.

AirBuccaneers for ut2004, kinda like your first idea. Have a look, it's pretty sweet.

Rex, I like your idea #2...

...but hey, why leave it at a slide show? What about a screen saver where the butterflies fly around? What about arranging the collected items and have it rendered to your desktop?

As for the safari idea - oh yes, give me a Nikon or a Canon, a Minolta and a Leica, or even a Hasselblad. Let me hunt wild life, beach life, let me be a paparazzi - or a war photographer! Let me shoot for the pulitzer!

In short, let me play the amateur photographers answer to "Deer Hunter"!

Exactly, Bjorn. That is the concept behind the gametypes, you take something away from the game experience for later, extending the user's interest in the Product. Be it slideshow, screensaver, whatever.....MOV's, .AVI's...

Idea#2 isn't a bad idea at all, though something similar did appear as an aspect of Nintendo's "Animal Crossing," so definitely something to examine and see which directions you can without bringing grief on yourself.

That's an awesome concept to expand the original concept on. You could even go as far as tying in an educational component by letting the user adjust the shutter time, f-stops, use different speeds of film, etc., much like a deer hunter might purchase mods for their rifle (scope, etc.). And it's a game that would appeal equally to female audiences as male, plus have the "family friendly" thing built in.

Idea 2: something like this?
