Survival Horror with TSE

Sup everyone,

I just purchased TGE and TSE today. A team of fellow students and I are considering using torque to develope a multiplayer survival horror game for our final project. We only have 3 months to complete a demo for the game, which is why we are considering torque for this project in particular. It seems like using the TSE to create a frightening immersive environment is the way to go. However i am wondering if there are any serious limitations in using the TSE over the TGE. The game will consist of primarily indoor environments, and need support for nice shadows and lighting effects. Im very new to torque, and am really just looking for some advice from people who are little more experienced with this technology than me. In the meantime you can be sure i am doing my homework ; )

Well, TSE isn't done yet, and I'm not even sure if it will support nice shadows and lightning within the next three months...
Also, it doesn't have sound yet, and the particle effects look terrible.

Heh, yea, I am starting to realize the limitations of TSE. Now I am trying to research methods of integrating shader support into TGE, which is looking slightly promising.

Well, TSE would normally be great for your project, I'm not saying that it's bad! It's just not done yet, so you should probably use something else, since you're on a time limit.
If this would be 2005, TSE would probably be awesome for a survival horror! :)

Stefan mirrored my thoughts exactly. If you want something that you can get up and running in 3 months, then irrlicht may be the thing for you. Either that, or creating a Quake III modification. Three months is an extremely short time for creation of a multiplayer SH demo, even in terms of creating art assets. Especially if your primary concentration is on whiz-bang graphics.

Since it's a demo, irrlicht would get you pointed in the right direction and working now without the limitations that are currently in place for TSE. When development on a full project begins, TSE will be much more mature. Then you can have stability + whiz-bang! graphics!
