Mount St. Helens Contingency Plan...

by Matt Summers · in General Discussion · 09/30/2004 (5:58 am) · 7 replies

Um... I'm flying in from Minnesota for IGC and have been following the volcano alerts going on. (what timeing btw) :o)

I have to fly right past the damn thing 4 times due to my connecting flight in Seattle. Any chance someone can record IGC for me in case Mt. St. Helens erupts and air traffic get shut down. :o)

GG, is there a policy for refunds due to volcanic activity? :o)

@Matt: I'm here in Portland, and nobody's too worried, a lot of it is media hype -- Portland is 55 miles from St. Helens, and Eugene is 165 miles from St. Helens. This isn't going to be like in 1980: "Scientists are predicting a much smaller event, with bursts of steam and ash and some possible landslides in the crater area and on the flanks of the mountain." Further, "Q: Would an eruption disrupt major transportation facilities, like Interstate 5 and Sea-Tac Airport? A: Most likely no." (Tacoma News Tribune, 9/30)

You'll see a little "edit" in italics below this if I end up cleaning three foot of ash from my car.

Personally, I'd be more worried about the giant mutant fly:

@Eric: Whoa, that thing is huge! If I see it as I fly over head I'll let you know. ;o)

I'm not too worried about, just think the timing is ironic... Of coarse if she blows as I'm flying over it, I reserve the right to change my opinion. :o)

LOL @ Erik. No kidding. My Mom and Dad had 4 mandatory evacuations from their house in Fla. in one month. They just got home tonight and my Mom said she is unpacking and not leaving again.

@Eric Forhan - Nice shot. I was reading a news post last night about Mt. St. Helens, and it linked to that camera. I clicked the link and saw nothing but static.

So, I'm like "Holy crap, it blew already, and killed the camera!". Then I realized it was 11pm, and I was just seeing "dark". Doh!

Someone could do a IGC GID tribute to this photo... you know, like GIANT ALIEN BUGS ATTACK MT. ST. HELENS -- AUTHORITIES COVER UP INCIDENT BY WARNING OF POSSIBLE VOLCANO EXPLOSION -- ENTIRE SQUADRON OF FIGHTER JETS DESTROYED, LONE UNDERDOG PILOT SAVES THE DAY
