Some Free Motion Capture Animations

by Robert Rice · in Artist Corner · 09/30/2004 (4:44 am) · 11 replies

For anyone that is interested, the current issue of "3D World" includes a CD that has several motion captured animations that can be imported into 3D Studio Max. This includes an excellent walk, jog, and run animation. Of course, there is no direct application to Torque, but it might be a great reference point for people who have animation issues (like me).

Good tip, thanks.

Is there a copyright on the animations, or restriction on distribution? If not, would it be possible for someone to post them online, so we can make a permanent resource out of them?

Josh,
I had actually thought about that after i posted the message. I will be looking into it as soon as I can. If I can generate some sort of resource from it, I certainly will. I will see if I can put it into some format that is more easily accessible to Torque users. God knows finding decent animations is a difficult quest. I'd like to give something back to this community that has provided me with so much help and information.

As soon as you find out if it's good news, I'll be in my truck getting that issue ;)

HERE is a crazy amount of free motion capture from Kaydara. 143 files in 3 pages... It's in FBX format so can be loaded into 3dsmax or Maya...

I believe it's royalty free, though if someone finds different, please post about it...

This seems to be the key paragraph, but someone more experienced in deeply analyzing licenses might be able to provide more insight. This was found in the EULA at the bottom of the page linked to by Josh R.

Quote:3. Rights Granted. The member grants to the 3rd party who either purchases license rights to content via a valid sale, or downloads freely available content submitted by the member, a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, royalty-free license to: publicly perform, publicly display, and digitally perform said content.

That's the TurboSquid EULA... it basically says that Kaydara has submitted those resources for free download and by doing so have granted the 3rd party (ie. you the person downloading) a "non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, royalty-free license to: publicly perform, publicly display, and digitally perform" to the files in question.

So yes, that content is free and available to be used in any manner you wish.

Hi Robert,

I have been trying to get a back issue of 3D World, the sep 2004 issue you spoke about but to no avail, I was wondering if you could zip up the animations on the CD and email it to me. I spoke to their back issues dept
since they don't have any copies past jan 2005, they suggested ebay or someone who has a copy.

It would be much appreciated.

regards

Emmanuel
