DeleD 3D modeller and mapper

by Dirk "dirkk" Krause · in Artist Corner · 09/02/2004 (8:09 am) · 50 replies

Hi y'all,

I'd like to introduce DeleD to the Torque community if it's not already known. It's a freeware modeller with a nice interface, that you can easily get a grip on.

It might be interesting for this here community especially because a .map exporter is in development right now (fresh off the press :-). Since I contribute I'd like to make this exporter as 'Torque'ish as possible, but it will most propably suit other engines, too.

Maybe you'd like to have a look here for more infos and downloads:
DeleD at http://www.delgine.com

Regards,
Dirk

I installed it on my system back in June. Like using it but lacked the import and export of different file formats. Let me know when it exports to dts and dif formats. If you can get it to do that... then I think it will be great for TGE.

It already does .obj import which is a good thing. For the time being we'd like to support .map rather that .dif (is there a format description of .dif somewhere?), since there is a map2dif already. Is there any advantage of creating .dif directly?

As long as you support Valve 220 map format, you should be fine for all geometry creation. That way map2dif *shouldn't* throw up all over it.

Keep us updated. It looks very interesting.

It must support Valve 220 map format. It would be nice if you could export dif format like you can with Quark. Lot of people don't like how Quark UI works. It just takes a liitle getting used to. I favor Cshop over Quark. I think if you get it to export dif format you will get alot of people using your program. If you are a sdk owner you can go to the docs section for the info on dif format. I my opinion, you should look at how Quark exports map and dif. You get it to do like that...you will have a killer software program. Anything that directly exports into Torque is a plus.

Right, Quark doesn't export to .dif directy.

On the other hand it shouldn't be hard to implement a call of map2dif from the exporter plugin, too, so I think this will be built in.

Cool!...that will be great Dirk. DeleD is really easy to use. A couple of us have been hoping that you would support Torque. I can't remember if I had sent you an email asking about Torque support a couple of months ago. We had tried out several programs in June. I first saw DeleD in PC Format Magazine. It had the DVD with it on it. It was one of 23 programs for 3D modeling and animation on disk. Other software it was with was Blender, Milkshape, 3D Canvas, Wings 3D. We tried out some of the others that we didn't have... DeleD was one of a couple programs that I kept on my system to use. Please let us know when you get exporter plugin done.

Too much honour for me - I am (unfortunately!) not the author of DeleD, Jereon is. But we'll keep pushing the exporter.

How does the portal work in Deled 3D?
I can't remember if I ever saw it in there when I used it a couple of months ago.

I wish we were that far :-). No portals in DeleD now - but there are custom properties that we can use. You're right, we have to come up with a clever solution for that.

I first downloaded it not long after you posted about it in the TGC boards, portals and anything else that things like Quark & Worldcraft have that DeleD don't would be great, then DeleD would totally beat out the other ones.

First (very early, very alpha) results here at the DeleD Forum.

Just wondering... if you got it to export to .map, did you use the map2dif or did you import it into quark then to .dif? Reason I was wondering... I would like to create things in Deled and import them into Quark to do the lighting and texturing temporary until you get the exporter complete.

I did
- export to .map
- convert with map2dif
Ready. No Quark inbetween.

It would be a nice test to try and import it into quark.

I was thinking about the lighting issue, too. For the current version I was thinking about introducing some special objects (maybe boxes with a name starting with 'light*') that make a placeholder for lights which get transformed to light entities in the conversion.

@Dirk:

Is DeleD cross platform? If not, can it be ported to Mac/Linux? We are very interested in what you are doing here. Please email joshw_at_garagegames.com (replace the _at_ with @) if you are interested in working with us to bring DeleD to the Torque community. There are definitely commercial possiblities if this product can work seamlessly with Torque in a cross platform manner.

Thanks for your interest: I'll talk to Jereon who is the author of DeleD, I am only doing the exporter. One of us will write to Josh asap.

DeleD is written in Delphi, the exporter in C++.

@mark: yes, the exporter seems to work great with Quark as you can see from this screenshot or from this thread mentioned above.
