Re: MMORPG Hosting

I once found a site that provided hosting (not webhosting, server hosting) for games, and discounts for those that were still in beta. Unfortunately, the computer with the link to that website crashed and I have yet to find them again. Does anyone know of any such site, or can you recommend a site that would be able to host that type of game?

My team is running a serverpark a few kilometers from here (in Sweden). How much bandwidth do you require?

I'm not sure yet, we're looking to host 6 zones at launch with the capacity to have about 128 players per zone.

Ok after much research I have a bit more data....

we're looking to run about 3-5 megabits per 64 players.... eventually (but not at launch) we'll need about 60 megabits for 768 players.

If you like you can email me at RichVStone@cableaz.com to talk about it further.

Are you sure on those numbers?

I've been hearing that the target numbers are 4-6 kbps, and that even higher demand games are in the 8-10 kbps range.

Unless I am so overtired that my math is badly screwed up (possible, it's a late night at work!), you're looking at as much as 78 kbps, which is way, way more than you should be needing.

A 3 mbps connection should work OK for 300 or so players, even on a fairly high bandwidth game. I think?

I checked the math with a few people and they all are in agreement for every 64 players you get you need a 3-5 megabit connection to be able to service them. Unless their math is wrong, which I'd love because then it'd be cheaper for me...hehehe

Just as a for instance, I've read (not actually done so!) that you can host about 64 people on Torque/Tribes or Neverwinter Nights via an aDSL or home cable connection, neither of which is generally quite that large. I am *NOT* certain on the accuracy of that data (although it seems reasonable) however, nor how it relates to the network code you're using in your game.

Take a look at www.serverpronto.com, they're what I'm using.

There are a few lists of dedicated server providers out there:

Good luck
