It depends entirely on your interests. There is often a lot of theoretical discussion (e.g. abstract articles on cutting edge lighting techniques) and it leans a little more toward coders and a little less to artists, but there have been some great articles for both. I appreciate some of the detailed insight given by some game industry veterans and the projects they've worked on, trials & tribulations, etc.

It can be somewhat thin for the price, especially if that month's contents aren't something you personally are interested in. Also much of what is covered is often amply available on the net if you search well.

But really, best to just pick up a single issue on the newstand if you can and see if it is your cup of tea.

They tend to like to give out free subscriptions, too. I've had a free one on and off for years. (This was before I was a "serious" game developer.)

It's renewel time this month. Qualify and it's free.

It's a worthwhile magazine if you can get the free subscription. Otherwise, I recommend you join GamaSutra (it's free) - you'll get most of the 'meaty' articles a few months later that way.

I personally have always enjoyed their post-mortems. But yeah, a lot of coder stuff mostly.

The September issue also has a review of Torque Game Engine ;-)

Will they have a rep at IndieGameCon?
