Mac noob questions...

by Bruce R Anderson · in Torque Game Engine · 08/08/2004 (4:47 pm) · 8 replies

I've recently acquired an iMac G4 and it only has OS X 10.2 installed. I found out that I can't compile anything on it at the moment since I don't have the compiler.

Should I upgrade to 10.3 or would it be worth it to wait for 10.4?

My primary devel platform is Windows, but I do plan on making everything work with Mac and Linux as well.

Did it not come with install disks for the Developer software? (XCode or Project Builder, depending on the version)

This deve environment is free with the OS... but maybe not until 10.3. I think that if you hunt around on developer.apple.com you may be able to find a download of it, too.

@Bruce,

Xcode ( the compiler ) comes free with 10.3 and will probably come with 10.4 also.
Check Apple's site for Tiger's release date. I imagine it will be by the end of the year. In those cases, sometimes, when you purchase an obsolete OS you get an imediate upgrade. So I would wait until that happens.

You also can download Xcode from apple's ADC site. Just register and download it. it's free.

I went to ADC and it listed XCode as a $20 purchase. Did I go to the wrong place?

I'll probably wait for Tiger. Thanks for the feedback.

Greetings Bruce.

You'll want to go to the download tools section of the ADC web site. You may also purchase a CD for $20 if you don't want to download it. But the download is free other than the time it takes.

However, I believe it requires 10.3.x, so you'd need to at least upgrade to that.

Ah okay. Yeah XCode does require 10.3.x so I'm just going to have to upgrade. I've got a motif rack that is having some troubles with 10.2 (at least that's what the techs say).

I would just hate to drop the money on 10.3 and have 10.4 come out soon after (I'm not going to trust that they would offer a free upgrade).

Followup:

Ended up getting Panther today. Installation took awhile (Yes, I really needed Traditional Chinese support :P) but all is gravy now. Compiled flawlessly. Nerdvana? (getting everything up and running on Windows, Linux and Macintosh).

One question: Debug version doesn't seem to respond (I had to force quit on it) - I've never used XCode before, is there something I need to explicitly do to get it to do something? Release worked just fine.

Well, make sure that it is running the debug from the right directory. It will choke without access to the main.cs file.

Xcode is free but Xcode is only on 10.3+ (there was a 10.2 version but it was killed). The $20 is to have them send you a CD. There should have been developer CDs with the OS that has Project Builder (in a nutshell the 10.2- version of Xcode) on it.

If you don't have that, sign up for ADC (free) and you can download the tools there (hundreds of megs though).

Or just upgrade to Panther and it'll have the developer CDs with it. Panther kicks Jag's butt anyway.
