2-Bits are Plenty

Buying this T-shirt has inspired me to do... CGA artwork!
Behold, I present the glory of 2-bit color with only two predefined palettes (with two intensities)! Shield your eyes, those who must have such "necessary" tools like 24-bit color or high resolution, for a mere glimpse of this will drive you mad, I tell you, ...MAD!

I call it, "OMG! WHO MADE ME CGA??!"
Here's another (better) one:

I've recently done some work for an Atari Jaguar game in palettized 8-bit (256 color). That alone was about to drive me mad, since certain sprites could only use a certain section of the palette. If you can CGA, you're a far, far better man than I! ;-)

Gah. I think I am crazy. I willingly drew in CGA. What next? VIC-20 block graphics?
Fascination with old hardware = bad.

I always admire cool stuff done on a limited budget and this is no exception. It reminds me of the zx-spectrum start-up screens with 'attribute-clash'. Some were awful but some seemed to be able to make it look like there were more colours than were possible, like the 'Ultimate, Play the game' series screens.
The first house I got when I left home had wallpaper like that ... eewwww. ;)

... so you're saying that I shouldn't add 2-bit graphic support into T2D? :)I always admire cool stuff done on a limited budget and this is no exception. The first image, if you look very closet to it, you can see lines moving, or pixels shaking? I think it's the Hz on the monitor, I bet mine isnt the only one doing it.

Anyway, here's a cool retro article about how life used to be like for PC game programmers. (Summed up in short: ABYSMAL)
Tony: Strange, really? I don't notice, but I'm using LCD, so that's probably why, no scanlines. :)
PS: GG doesn't have a 2D-art area and this is the best category I found. Perhaps we could use a concept area/2D art forum?

LOL! Melv: I find doing artwork with severe color limitations is real good practice. In fact, almost everything I have learned about using color has come from doing low-resolution, limited-color game-style artwork. After messing with CGA, I now have real respect for late 80's/early 90's game artwork like this, which made the best use of the extremely crappy hardware as possible. When EGA finally came out, it was like Nirvana. Finally, 16 colors that didn't entirely suck! :)Anyway, here's a cool retro article about how life used to be like for PC game programmers. Of course, she had to deal with Deskmate, heehee. I tried to disable it for her, but that particular Tandy had DOS 3.3 plus DeskMate stored in an actual ROM that it booted from. No way around that.

Tandy, I remember envying my friend's Tandy and the ability for it to generate 16-color graphics -- She could play King's Quest in EGA mode! But my PC just had a CGA adapter...Of course, she had to deal with Deskmate, heehee. Cause last I checked, Section 9.48r-924.A of the Patriot Act specifically
states that " NO person(s), animal(s), organic, or inanimate cell structure(s)
here in shall partake, promote, encourage, or affilliate with such technology
past, present, and future which uses or used 16bit or less of visual stimulation".
Ok here is the kicker......
Something about terrorist using old Ataris and computers to train new recruits. Has to do with the ability to hide secret messages within the 2-8 bit
images.
freaky? I know.....
Well anyways David, nice work on the wolf images, but just one question,.....
whats up with the 47 virgins dancing around him?
(sniff)...(sniff)...gas....anyone else smell that? been weeks now.
nice work,
JG
