Video Card shopping...need your advice

by Jason Toubia · in General Discussion · 07/29/2004 (2:08 pm) · 29 replies

Hello,

Well it's that time of the year when upgrading my video card sounds like a good way to spend my rent money :-)

Could anyone tell me any of the following?

1) Do you prefer ATI or nVidia?

2) What is the best nVidia card?

3) What is the best ATI card?

4) Best card for around $299

I don't know if $299 is what I am going spend. Could be more or less, it all depends on what looks like the best deal. Has anyone used the nVidia GeForce 6800 ($299)?

You help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was just saying that for 3d artists using Max/Maya etc. Nvidia cards have better drivers and a lot more stability. Depends on what you use your card for really.

For general gaming ATI are probably the best for the current generation, for 3D apps Nvidia have the edge by considerable margin

Might want to take a look at this site to get the "real" scope on what chips/cards work better.

I just ordered my first video card in 4 years.

I went with the MSI RX9800PRO-TD128 ... A heck of a card for $185 ... it is recognized as a 9800XT as it has the 360 core :)

I can't wait to play with this card!!!

Josh: have ATI improved their Linux support yet? Or are you Windows/OSX only?

This is kind of an older thread, but thought I would put in my .02c, on my recent purchase:

Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 AGP8x - approx $130 online. This is one of the better Nvidia cards currently out and and is compatible with newer games such as Torque Shader Engine.

I bought a FX 5700 LE a month ago. I am not one of those benchmark junkies who need the fastest system around. I also use a very old driver (56.something) cause all the newer drivers have problems with some games or cheat to get top performance in benchmarks (look out! 3Dmark05 has been released)

I would never spend more than 150 euro on a GFX card just because a new engine tech demo (Doom3) requires it. I have been looking at the new Nvidia 6600 series. It's cheap (around 200-250) and has all the features of the bigger 6800. I just wait for xmas sales and grab one for below 200. In my eyes it's ridiculous to spend 500 euro on a gfx card, I rather upgrade my CPU or RAM.

just my 2cents.

A minor issue perhaps, but I've used geforce and radeon cards.

And whenever possible I go with radeon because they're much quieter.

Currently using a 9800 pro in a Shuttle box... very very quiet.

I, too have a 9800 Pro in a shuttle box. I was able to get the 9800 Pro with a MASSIVE wraparound heatsink, so it uses no fans ( no noise, and MUCH more reliable).

I have read some great reviews on the upcoming Radeon X700 and the GeForce 6600 GT. If you can wait a few more months, these may provide the best ang for the buck.

Well, as I posted earlier, I bought the nVidia 6800. Its great. However, I just went out and got a AMD64 3200 and immedialty had problems with the graphics card. Most games began to freeze for 5 seconds every 30 seconds or so. However this was only on DX games...OpenGL games didn't have this problem.

I am posting this so that if anyone does get the 6800 and experiences this problem and needs a fix.

1) Of course make sure you get the latest drivers. I use 66.82.

2) Download RivaTuner 2.0 (google it). With RivaTuner installed, disable fast-write. You can disable fast-write in your bios however I favor doing it via RivaTuner to be certain it's off.
