by MichaelFlya · in Torque Game Engine · 07/20/2004 (6:34 pm) · 15 replies

Hi, I'm New

Names MichaelFlya
and this is my first Post!!!!!

Well I just bought the (TGE) for $100$ and I'm stumped sofar :)

Nah not really

But, Rather than me looking through these forums like I Have been for week about my specific operating system and bugs.

Why not start a thread
Think (story line)
I know nothing
lets see what I can come up with!!!
To not only show me how to do it but I'm sure this thread will show others how to one day becouse
my veiw of this is a common problem for many!!!!

Happy Ending in my -----HOPES-----

Ok let me start with the very first thing,

I have Windows Home Edition XP

I have the TGE)

I have 3ds studio max 5 or 5.1)

I have time)

I have No compiler)

I have No Money)

so with all this in mind the object of this small question is
(I want to get started)

so with a Typical Direction in mind for me lets say
I want a landscape with a guy to run around!!!!

ok
lets just add that the demo came with all this already with the GUI editor which was great!!!!

So........
how do I get that in the Full version that I just bought!!
don't really have to go into any detail at all about "Code"

I know theres an already put together game in the TGE files
just without the compiler and is most likely is the same as the demo but with more features!!!!!

I've made many models for (Gamelike) places and was Succesfull!!
I'f you would like to know where Its a Online social gaming site networking thing called (THERE) www.there.com If you Haven't already heard of it but !!! Anyway,Back to (TGE) lol

so to make it short)

what do I do?

And Thanks to every Poster Underme telling me what to do and what not todo in Advance!!!!!! lol

Michael,

Glad you are reading the documentation.

Here is a good link to the officially recommended compiler on Windows (you are correct, it's MS VC++ 7.1)

That page will take you to Amazon.com, which sells the compiler for ~30% off the recommended price (so, it's about $80).

You do need a compiler in order to compile the source code. :) You don't *have* to use this particular compiler, but we recommend it because it's the easiest to use. The fact that it costs money is a bummer, but I guess that's the cost of having something that's easy to work with. There are free compilers available, but they are harder to get running, for people that are new to working with compilers in general.

Once you get a hold of a compiler, you can continue on with the documentation you were reading for a step-by-step guide to compiling (at least, if you are using an officially recommended compiler).

Alternatively, you could work with the demo available on the site. You can do *a lot* just using that demo, and then move on to working with the source-code and a newly compiled build of the engine once you get comfortable working on stuff.

Hope that is of some help.

Thanks alot Josh one or way another I'm gonna get a Game made ROFL

Ok so I see even better prices through the used and new links.
I always use that rofl.

I mean you can always be sure its ok and buy New for $81.59 dollers but, when I went it was around 30 - 40 dollers half that low price that it was already ROFL but, anyway

While I'm hovering over the buy Buttons
Least for now Does anyone know why I'm getting the error from eclipse saying:

Failed to Open "main.cs"

Thats whatever I try to run

I really dont understand the method to compile debug and finally run succesfully in that program (Eclipse).

Ive used other compilers for other engines a free cheap one was Bloodshell dev C++ which worked great for other things just hit F9 and your on your way but, I can't seem to see that in eclipse
also after you Hit run it ask for me to choose a configeration
so I dont have any idea what to choose from there.

Also I soppose and Assume that the MS VC++ 7.1 is as easy as bloodshelldev c++ just hit a F Key I dunno. but one Great thing I would really like to know is eclipse looks like you have to have Interenet when installing it,
Is MS VC++ 7.1 like that too?!?!?!

and on top of that DO I just Backup my Folder <<(Torque)>> and
after I Restore my computer do I just Drop it back in C:/drive that should work shouldn't it and if I get MS VC++ 7.1 that should Eliminate me needing to be hooked up every time I'm ready to install all my junk?

I do alot of system Restores guess you can think of it as Cleaning Between the Cracks!!!

Thinks back and sees History of Viruses,Ad ware,Browser Hackers>

lol anyway Thanks for that link!!!!

OOoOo also is There a Link for the Non Deluxe at Amazon.com
Just 20 dollers more right?

And if I did get the 80$ doller Deluxe one like that link up Above Suggest, what could I use to use as a optimizing compiler. to finish?

Thanks

Michael, I'm not sure about Eclipse, but when people encounter that "Could not open main.cs" error, it's because the working directory is not set to the example directory. I don't have a step-by-step guide for Eclipse, but you should be able to figure out how to set it by digging around a bit.

Regarding using an optimizing compiler.. don't put the cart before the horse. :) Use the cheap compiler for now, and you can worry about optimizing once you get at least a good prototype going.

Ok just to be sure and I'm not sure,,, what is this I have here in this link can it be used for optimizing compiler seems free
but, do I need some other non free program to use it

when I was looking I just wasnt sure
so to put it like I'm thinking
I could buy VC++ 7.1 Deluxe and
use the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003
for optimizing am I correct

Click here for the link its The Visual C++ Toolkit 2003

Thanks tho I'm Getting started atleast
I am so new to it all but,
I've took the torqueDemo-Application file found in torque/example
and rewrote the main.cs file to open some of the other demos instead of opening the starter.fps
like the starter.racing or that other called tutorial.base
and some others

My question for that is how do I make my own Excutable.exe Application file without having to rewrite main.cs everytime? and this should tell you how new I am to this ROFL!!!

Tho I'm sure I have to make my own folder for it with all the right folders and >>>files<<< but I'm still searching through Forums & docs & manuals & folders and such for that answer!!!

Thanks All

Use the pre compiled exe that comes in the installer. No need to compile unless you start to get into the source.

Best first step is to go to the TDN (tdn.garagegames.com/).
Work through the beginner tutorials and before you know it you have a little man running about a map.

Worry about getting the engine to compile when you start to get into the source.

I can't offer you much help with the error above, I have not got the point where I need to compile the engine yet.

Thanks for responding, but I'm not sure if you realize that you answered a question that was asked about 22 months ago :)

Thanks good point Travis.

I'd like to say that even if it has been two or three years since a
question has been asked the person who was wanting to know
might still be wanting to know or need help. I myself had time to
learn how to use this engine when I posted, but didn't have very
good information to get started even somewhat. Now I see more
learning sources and possibility's, but do not have the time.

I'll also add that at most people need to crank out
some video tutorials about every step of compiling
TGE, the setup, and what you can do to the source
for a compile. Sell it though GarageGames that way
you need a license to view. Hopefully it won't be
more than 1/4 the price of the TGE.

I had no problems compiling the engine with Visual C++ 2005 Express and using the instructions on TDN. MS has your hook-up!
