Tradewars

by David .NfoCipher. Bunt · in General Discussion · 07/18/2004 (5:49 pm) · 43 replies

I've started up a ol' Tradewars 2002 server. Just adding to the list of things that distract everyone from doing anything productive.
You can telnet into it (need ansi emulation) at tradewars.chickenware.com or use the browser www.chickenware.com/tradewars/

Have fun..

Putty handles it pretty well for all you win32 folk.

Anyone know what settings should be used with Putty ?
Might just be me not being used to text based consoles anymore :)

I ended up using the TELNET that comes with Windows. Drop to a command line and type TELNET, then type "o tradewars.chickenware.com". Worked like a charm and has ANSI support.

Thanks, it does look a lot better with the ms telnet client :)

Edit : I recommend making a little, simple batch file for easy access. Simply make a text file called tradewars.bat and write the following in it :

telnet tradewars.chickenware.com

That will open the server, without having to type the o command :)

See ya all in space ;)

Beautiful! Brings back old memories.

I had wrote some TradeWar utilities myself back in the day. One, called TW Swapper, let you run multiple copies of TradeWars in a single directory, giving the user a menu choice before starting the game. It even let you teleport your character from one "universe" to another.

Thank you for reminding me how much fun this used to be! Who remembers TWTracker and all those other programs for keeping track of trade routes, creating galaxy maps, etc. We took this game seriously. :)

Harold: Rock on, that's a nifty telnet client. Works good for ANSI, too.

I also wrote my own somewhat TW2002-like door game, called Universal Mastery. It was a lot like TW, except it had a built-in bulletin board and some other features that TW didn't. One of the memorial items was, in a certain starbase, you had a game in the bar called "WIN OR DIE." Pulling the lever would either get you 1,000 credits or instant character death. I had a few people who were fighterless/planetness go there, do the equivalent of standing on the edge of a tall bridge, ready to jump -- and come out with enough funds to get them back into the game. :)

A sucky thing about UM was the space plague you could get; If you didn't quarantine for a certain number of turns, you'd end up spreading it to your other planets when you landed on them, reducing their population and productivity.

Hmm, this version of TW is far more advanced than the one I used, must be a newer version. Fed Commlink? Corporations? Ah, I see, it's version 3. Keen!

MTelnet rocks. I use it for most of my BBSing. If you're a wussy though then you can get a telnet tradewars helper that will do port stealing and all that. Personally I do it manually but to each his own.

Everything alright with the server? I noticed yesterday that it wasn't up for a while - then it got really dawgie. This morning it doesn't seem to be up again. Wassup man - I need my fix!

You can blame charter business services.. They're "upgrading" equipment in my area. Which really means - hey, you're just pretty much screwed no matter how much you're paying us each month.

Thats tight man.

I was in the middle of making my moves this morning and your server went down again leaving me hanging out there to dry. I tried for many hours to reconnect but to no avail. Finally the server came back up, I reconnect, only to find that you have destroyed me.

Is the server going to be up and down like this anymore? I'd rather chew on glass than spend all that time rebuilding only to get caught by the server going down again.

Well, there was the "upgrades" followed by cronic sync loss. The move and I just got slammed by what's left of the hurricane. I dunno, server up time has been pretty good considering.

It's about time to start a new game anyways. Most of the major power has been eliminated and it would be very hard to make a come back at this point.
