Which 3dsmax to buy

by Cody Mc · in Technical Issues · 06/26/2004 (12:18 pm) · 6 replies

Hi,

I'm going to be purchasing 2 or 3 copies (I hope) of 3dsmax soon - the primary platform they'll be used for is torque. My question is - what version should I buy?

As far as I know, there's no reliable tool for any version beyond 5 - and that has no support for multi-res, right?

I'm concerned that I'll purchase the copies of 6, and then the
artists will sit around on their thumbs while we wait and hope someone develops a max 6 exporter. :)

Best,
Cody

Max 5 to dts.

Surely your artists(if they use max) must have max themselves?

Thanks Daniel - that helps a lot.

Re: artists having Max - sure, those I work with freelance. I may be setting up an actual office/studio environment, though. In which case I assume I'd need to buy copies for use in the office.

I haven't been able to locate a copy of the license - my assumption is that you're paying the full rate per user(computer). Any info on that?

Cody, you actually don't have much of a choice you can only purchase 3DS Max R6. If you are super lucky you might find a reseller who foolishly still has an old R5 copy sitting around, though I doubt you will get much if any discount on it, plus when R7 is released you will not get a free upgrade to it (for purchasing at this time) and will have to pay to upgrade.

In regards to an R6 exporter, I believe that there is a simple version of it that someone compiled here on the forums. It doesn't do multires though and probably requires you to UnMess it. You could compile it yourself though if you really wanted it badly enough, you will have the SDK for Max as well as the source code from GarageGames.

In regards to starting up a new studio, I also recommend that you use freelancers who own a legitamite version of the software off the start. Unless you have funding to keep an artist or two around for at least a year investing in any sort of art tools for them is a bad idea at this time. You might at the very least want a copy for the studio if you really feel the need to do some tihngs yourself though.

Logan,

Thanks - yes, in looking around, I see that you're right about Max 6 pretty much being the only one available. I suppose I could always pay someone to make me a fully functional plugin for Max 6 - that's in the advanced area for me personally. :)

Here is a fix for 3dsmax 6 and multires though it still requires unMessDTS.. As Alex said at the bottom of the post, email him for the FTP info so you can download the max6tools files.
