Sierra Bye-Bye?? and Whats the Vivendi story?
by Stephen Clark · in General Discussion · 06/21/2004 (1:40 pm) · 42 replies
Ok, maybe nasty effed-company rumor, but I figured someone here would know for sure: is sierra gone!?! As a local business and makers of good games back in the day I will be very sorry to see them die, although maybe their time was done long ago...
Also, what is the whole story with vivendi? I saw jeff's post, and I read something else about them doing layoffs and some french paper about the dudes in custody. Someone care to explain the timeline and elaborate?

I say, next major piece of Sierra news, we ditch this thread and start a new one. I don't know that there's enough news to warrant a whole site about it.

I'm guessing that Vivendi Universal's game division has been and will be in "panic mode" unless/until they become profitable, which may never happen. Any publisher operating in "panic mode" will have huge problems, such as ultra-rapid turnaround of key people, like producers and company executives. It's hard to develop a great game when the publisher changes your producer every month or two. It's hard for a publisher to make money if they constantly kill projects that they have invested millions of dollars in.

Does this in any way effect Garage Games, and if so how?

@CCE: GG is a seperate entity from Dynamix/Sierra/VU. This does not affect us beyond, of course, giving indies even more opportunities... :)

And causing a few more out-of-work former Vivendi employees to consider going indie...

They will definitely loose many good employees, even in this crap job market. Or, as what happens at many companies where they screw employees, the employees will basically not work except the bare minimum to keep from being fired, which is a hard thing to control. Morale really does matter in a software house. I've seen it happen many a time.

Hell yeah, sue away! I hope that dude and his comrades get their due monies. Sucks to be constantly overworked due to stupid management. I think we repayed you during WWI when you surrendered, oh and again in WWII when you cowered... I have nothing against french ppl but history has proven France dosent have the balls to back anything, This may be a good approach, after all france is still in existance. and heh.. thanks to us, they arent german. But i dunno, France has alot of arrogance, and not enough action.. Kind of like the little guy with the big mouth...

"Yeah, helping you out during your war of independence from Britain was a really crappy thing to do. And how dare they present you with a gift as symbolic of freedom as the Statue of Liberty. Really you should send it back immediately!"I think we repayed you during WWI when you surrendered, oh and again in WWII when you cowered... Don't talk about things you have no clue about as if you were an expert...
Necroing a thread just to spout off more of that French bullshit (and yes, I have dual citizenship : Canuck and French) is really the way to show that you have nothing against French people...
Go check the history books about France contributions to Western history, and then come back and humbly apologize...
As for arrogance, look to your own backyard before pointing the neighbors.
Btw, according to history, it's not thanks to the States that France is not German, or the UK, etc. but thanks to the Russian and Hitler's blunder of attacking them at the time he did against his generals advice.
That statement of yours could have been construed as arrogance, I think...
Oh, and France didn't cower in WWII : ever heard of the Resistance ?
Did you ever stop to think that France fell, and Great Britain nearly did because the US were too entangled in the German economy to take a firm stance ? That their refusal to actively participate in WW2 before Pearl Harbour happened contributed directly to its lasting so many years ?
And on WW1 : it's commonly accepted that the American participation wasn't a deciding factor in WW1, since they only joined up the Allies effort in 1917...
Check the f**cking facts... But no, to do that, would require effort, and reading said facts from more than one source...
Four words : STFU and go hide in your cave, moron (apologies to GG, but I jsut can't stand ignoramuses spouting off imbecilities like this anymore...)

Lonnie, way to go about not knowing your history, moron : go read some WW1 history books, France never surrendered, matter of fact, they even dictated the terms of the Versailles treaty which pissed off the Germans to the end of setting up WWII.Don't talk about things you have no clue about as if you were an expert...

Unfortunately, I wouldn't expect Vivendi to branch off much in the video game industry. In face, I'd expect to see everything cut back, aside from games that would be beneficial enough to warrant inclusion. Vivendi considers video games to be, basically, a third rate industry.

Sierra is being kept as a name, since it's recognized and can be used as a marketing device.Unfortunately, I wouldn't expect Vivendi to branch off much in the video game industry. I would not be surprised if Vivendi pulled and Infogrames manuever and renamed their entire game division "Sierra" for the name recognition. (as Infogrames did w/ the Atari name)

No Sierra, who will continue the Hoyle game series! What's it up too, version XXXVIII?

I didn't know Infogrames = Atari, though.
Edit: Has Atari anything to do with the manufacturer that made computers back in the 80's?
