Applying a material to my model isn't working (3D Studio)

First off, I'm a 3D Studio 5.1 newbie but I've had it for a while and thought I better put my investment to use.

I'm trying to model a simple low poly tree. My problem is that once I convert part of the model into an editable mesh and move vertices around I can no longer apply a material (bark.jpg). If I apply the material to an object that I have yet to mess with the verts it works fine. Applying a material to an object where I have manually moved verts around however simply changes the color of the object but the material pattern doesn't show.

I've spent the last two days Google searching and looking through a few modeling books that I have but to be honest, I'm not really even sure what I'm looking for. I probably have to convert the object or something before adding a material. Any guesses on what exactly needs to be done? Thanks in advance.

Kevin,

In your material Editor, choose the material and click on the "checker" looking square (When passing your mouse over it, it say "Show Map in vieport"). You will maybe need to add a UVW map modifier (depend on how your model is made) or an Unwrap UVW. Hope it help.

Gilles,

Adding the UVW Map modifier did it! I appreciate your help very much! Thank you again.

Off to Amazon for a 3D Studio specific book...

Kevin, you might want to take a look at the tutorials and documentation that ships with 3DS Max as it covers a lot of information such as UVW mapping and other important topics for a 3D artist to know and succeed.

There are also a large assortment of tutorials and docs on this subject provided here via the GarageGames community in the 'documentation' and 'resources' sections of this site.

In regards to book on the subject of UVW Mapping, I don't happen to recall any books that covered this subject in good detail, the closest might be 'Digital Texturing and Painting' by Owen Demers (but it is not application specific and covers a wide range of topic regarding texture creation).
