How is this package used?

I'm just curious - how difficult would the typical non-programming artist find the TSE package learning curve? Is it easy to use? Is it all done locally in-game or can you export them from 3D packages? You must forgive me, I am only familiar with shaders as far as what 3D packages can do and not the implementation of how they work in game code. If I had some example of how a shader is created and used with this I might buy it, but see I don't want to spend the money only to realize I have to end up learning machine language or some such thing to use it.

That being said, if you're okay learning script, it looks like you can merrily use the procedural shaders by setting appropriate options in your materials. It'll take a little more work than 3d studio, but its doable if you don't mind learning something new.
I wouldn't be surprised to see "shader packs" coming out in the future that are fully compatible, or other such upgrades to the TSE, that would allow you to use new effects with the same interface.
All in all, its harder than a 3d modeling tool...but the interface they have developed is rather brilliant to my own mind, from the stand point of supporting individuals in your own situation.
I'd recommend learning the Torque script. In the current setup, if you are comfortable with doing some basic stuff in that, you'll do great getting started...you won't have full customization since you can't write your own, but I don't see you getting this kind of power any other way. My 2 cents.
