XBOX Port for TSE????

by Michael Kupka · in Torque Game Engine · 06/17/2004 (7:12 pm) · 54 replies

Is there any consideration being given to designing TSE to be portable to consoles? XBOX would be the easiest because of CPU, GPU, Memory.

I realize that Torque needs some work especially in memory management in order to run well on consoles.

This would be nice to have.

Previously, I'd have said this is a bad idea since the average indie realistically has no shot at developing a game for a console (not due to technical issues per se, but rather monetary and political ones).

However, given Microsoft's "Xbox Live Arcade" initiative, this is something GarageGames should probably be looking into, if they aren't already.

I'm not in the "loop". I'm a little loopy though.

I gotta say, though, I could check off one of my "dreams fulfilled" boxes if I had a game on a modern console. :)

I do have a little art on an Atari Jaguar game, but I'm not sure that counts. :-P

The Atari was once a modern console. ;)

Cool Eric, I was really into Atari consoles all the way back to the 2600. ;)

Ahh... it was a small run by my younger brother's company who still produces Jag and Lynx games. I was just trying to help out. It really is amazing to see how tiny the files are. I think the whole background to that was 320x200. Then make it palletized 256 color and it's really something to work with. lol

He is proof positive in the power of the video game niche market. It's not his full-time job, but it could well be.

I keep trying to get him to do a 16-bit(!)game on the Jag.

Sounds very interesting doesnt it? ( good ol' google!)

Oh, by the way, I relize no one cares, but I'm now back from my month long vacation / new city search, and have decided, pending finding a new job I'll be moving to Eugen Oregon so my wife and I can both go to school.

Hey Jay - I think you left the lid off of your can of worms. (First it was non-stop TSE questions. Now it's gonna be non-stop XBox questions :-)

Not really interested in xbox, but my Adam sure could use TSE. Graphics are rather lacking at the moment.

A console capable engine would certainly attract a lot of intention from where I'm sitting. Or perhaps even some notes on what all would need to be modified to achieve decent performance...

Oh my, I'm getting all excited from those links !CLUTCH! posted.

And when there is no confirmation nor denial from GarageGames I'm getting even more excited.
But why oh my the secrecy? Microsoft put the lid on it or maybe GG is gonna drop a tiny bomb?

Gotta stop my speculation now, or I would go on.

That would be a neat addition to such a feature-rich engine.

Conny, I'm sure that implenting whatever code the XBox requires and making certain it runs are two reasons. Getting that paddle to work should be a real winner.
And, not to mention the whole licensing issues, negotiations, and the required hours research with the Xbox game library. ;)
