Is any one here using blender rendering software?

Let me know what you think of Blender.

I know the GUI sucks, so you can skip that critique.

Any other open source game engine out there?

Just learned about Torque and Blender.

Stuff is right under my nose!

I haven't used the Blender game engine personally, so I can't answer that question. I can say a few things about blender and torque though. There is an exporter for going to DTS, as you likly learned (I guess as much from the second post). The current version is pretty good, and a new version is being worked on that will be much more feature complete.

I would agree that the interface for blender is strange and takes some getting used to, but the same can be said for most programs of that complexity level. That said, I kinda like it. It does what I need to do (while usually being capable of doing much more than I need to do, which might or might not be problematic), and the price is right.

There is a learning curve, but it might be worth your time to give it a chance...

The place to ask questions about blender's game engine would be http://www.elysiun.com/ Check the forums out if you haven't already. They Game Engine forum is towards the bottom.

I haven't used the blender game engine for much more than trying to do a few walk throughs on my models/scenes. Largely because the game engine got stalled in version 2.25 for a long time. The game engine is now available in the current releases and is actively being developed again. The solid library getting released open source was what finally allowed this to happen again.

While the blender game engine is capable of making some good games, it is pretty out of date and has more limitations than more current technology. The price is right though and I like the modeling part of blender, works well once you understand the workflow paradigm.

If you're looking for open source game engines, check sourceforge.net. Crystal Space is the one that comes to mind first for me, but I know there are others. You can find Crystal Space at http://crystal.sourceforge.net/tikiwiki/tiki-view_articles.php

The 2 engines above and Torque all have their strengths, weaknesses and costs involved, like any undertaking of this sort. If you're in the market, you should look at everything you can find out about them and make a choice as to what suites your needs best.

I am glad to see there are some people in this forum that know some thing about blender.

I am using it because it is OpenSource. I think that this OSS model will be more successful in the non-commercial markets.
