TSE demo not working on ATI 9200.
by Nathan Tran · in Torque Game Engine · 06/04/2004 (11:33 am) · 80 replies
Hi,
My setup:
ATI 9200 128mb
DirectX 9b
Catalyst Drivers v4.5, v4.6beta
I get the following problems:
The demo runs but when I load the walkthrough all I see are the UI overlays, and occasionally the skybox and a floating cube with a flow chart texture. Everything else is purple.
Screenshot:

Things I've tried:
- Checked AA setting. Made sure it's on application pref
- modified the pref file: forcePixVersion = 1; forcedPixVersion = 1.3;
Any suggestions?
Nathan.

When was the last time you installed Windows on your machine? If it's been more than a year and you've installed several different drivers, it might help to wipe your system and start over.
We've got an Athlon XP 1.3ghz machine here that runs both a Radeon 8500 and the Geforce 3 64MB just fine. It was wiped about a month ago and it's got a clean install of Windows 2000.

New ATI Catalyst 4.6 drivers came out yesterday, might help Nathan. When was the last time you installed Windows on your machine? If it's been more than a year and you've installed several different drivers, it might help to wipe your system and start over.

Anyway, I did a fresh install of XP on the secondary drive and put Win2000 on the primary drive after reformating it. This way I can boot up with either and move files around in emergencies plus it won't hurt for testing. I copied all the files I needed off the primary drive before reformatting of course. I have the updated BIOS working too.
I'll try TSE again tonight.
I did have all the windows updates when trying the TSE demo earlier.

Speaking of wiping a system. I flashed the BIOS on my nvidia machine which was "successful" but it trashed the OS somehow.Anyway, I did a fresh install of XP on the secondary drive and put Win2000 on the primary drive after reformating it. Crap, still got pink screen. Latest drivers, all windows updates, fresh install on a reformatted drive, updated BIOS. I also tried all the different suggestions. Very strange it's only on a few systems.

Home or Professial?
I have Professial without the latest drivers and I've never seen a pink screen (tried with laptop and main computer).

Out of interest, which version of XP are people running.. Home or Professial?

Can people with this problem post here this session of the console.log? I think that the problem might be lack of SSE instructions.-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Good luck with it. I'm running XP Pro, btw.

Hmm...

Most mysterious... You have no SSE and I'm assuming you're getting the pinkscreen.Hmm...

Also, why have the SSE2 extensions not been added just out of curiosity?

SSE2 hasn't been added because the extensions between SSE1 and SSE2 aren't all that huge, and also, we have more important things to do (like TSE!). If you want to write them, go for it - but the wins aren't big enough that it's really neceesary (ie, you're only likely to see a <10% gain).

AMD Athlon 1.2
ATI Radeon 9600 pro (latest catalyst as of 06/28/04)
Windows XP pro (all service packed and hot fixed up)
512mb ram
I am not upgrading my VIAs anymore as that seems to be a crap shoot a fair bit of the time and everything (City of Heroes, Far Cry Star wars galaxies, etc, etc, etc), works fine EXCEPT TSE!

Do you have SSE? The first few lines of your console log are most important, where it says what CPU extensions you have.

Awesome...

It is SSE related. I disabled the SSE math extensions on my system and the problem reproduced.Awesome...

Getting the pink screen :(
Any possibility to turn off the SSE-Requirement ?

Got it finally working. It's really SSE, after updating my BIOS
with a oc-beta (enabling SSE), the demo now works fine.

It's not an SSE requirement, it's just that there's a bug in the non-SSE math code (as far as I can tell - more experimentation will give more data), so only the SSE enabled code works.

How can I activate my sse extensions??
