Tribes 3 at E3 = Depression

by Chris "Had Chris First" · in General Discussion · 05/19/2004 (8:57 pm) · 26 replies

Oh, they've completely beaten my favorite game to death. Im so depressed after watching the gameplay video. I was defending the game for a while on these forums, and now it seems all in vein, I was giving myself false hope. I know this sounds dramatic for a game, but I am really into games. I cant belive what they did, grrrr. Just watch it for yourself I dont have a link, but I know its at fileplanet. Why cant they just make tribes 1 in a new engine, and add renegades. I loved it because there was strategy in defending, and because it wasnt Quake 3 with jetpacks. Ok so im distraught, have a goodnight.

I dunno... I'd reserve judgment until the game is actually out. If you watch the TribalWar forums, it's quite obvious the developers are tweaking the gameplay a lot, and they honestly seem to listen to feedback.

I think it'll be a fun game, when it's done. Actually, I'm really excited about it. But I could easily be accused of Tribes-fanboyism

At least withold your despair until you actually try the game. Remember there will be a long open beta too, and you can bet the most die-hard T1 fans will be vociferous during that phase.

Lemme tell you. You will _never_ beat the gameplay of T1. If was groundbreaking. No FPS' prior to that really had team based play, it was just awesome.

I felt the same way when I saw Halo going to be an XBox title, don't worry man :)

I'm a Tribes fanboy too, but I'm utterly depressed about Vengence, it is so the wrong direction to take the series in. Chris, I'm with you.

I've been looking at the game myself, and while I too would like to preserve judgement until its in my hands, I can't help feeling that, after watching the various gameplay movies, it seems more like a UT mod than an extension of Tribes (that they are both tournament style games doesn't help I'm sure :). It looks great though...I love the art design and direction they chose. Also, I'm sure the Starsiege mod will be a nice addition :)

I'm sure that at the very least, it will be a good game, if not a "Tribes game". I'll be trying the demo at the very least.

I think it looks like it has the T1 feel. I'm excited about the game and feel as long as they can keep it relatively bug free then the modders can hopefully adjust things to be more tribes like if need be.

The thing that made me feel better was I think it was either Mark or Rick who played the demo at GDC and said it felt like tribes and to my recollection were impressed/pleased with it at it's stage. So don't get all worried yet. And don't get too optimistic either ;)

Isn't venegence on a UT2k3 engine? I personally think thats sickening, THE NEXT TRIBES SHOULD BE TRIBES ONE WITH ALOT MORE FEATURES FUN AND BE BUILT ON TSE AND TORQUE imo.

I find it ironic that on a site devoted to the ideas of gameplay over graphics and new experimental designs, that there is rabid support for the idea of redoing an old game with new graphics.

And this constant idea that the game has to be on Torque is ridiculous. It reeks of fanboy attitude. This sort of thing does NOT help the Torque community. A reasoned analysis of the benefits of other engines would.

Ken Paulson

Those who haven't tried other engines and just TGE cannot speak about other engines and how great they are, because they simply don't know.

I for one don't know anything about the other ones, I've tried Nebula Device and some of the others, but they didn't catch my interest and here I am.

Some of us praise the engine as one of the best, that's not anything unusual at all IMO. Both you and me have our favourites, I'm sure.

It's not fanboy attitude, it's speaking from what we've seen and learned.

Cheers.

I've seen all sorts of engines, its just from my experiances the UT2k3 engine is better with bsp format maps. I've also seen/tried many many open source engines and tribes seems to be like its more partial to the torque engine, and with tse i feel it would run better and be a better choice for sierra.

Having devoted a good 1 1/2 years of nights to the original Tribes I think what was most satisfying about the original game was it's simplicity. Yet, in it's simplicity it was the evolution of the gameplay that made it so fun.

I think it's the case in every game, but Tribes in particular was completely driven by what each player brought to the game. And not what the game brought to the player. I don't know if that makes sense but I don't know how else to put it.

I've never played a game where a one on one duel, with an enemy, out in the middle of the field would be come almost epic to watch. It was fun to just sit back and just see two people go at it. There was an elegance to it that I've never seen before. And maybe won't ever see again. Anyone can jump into a game and run and gun. But, there was an aspect of Tribes that allowed you to really become a master in this strange cyber art of war.

The feeling you would get when you would be engaged with multiple enemies and would make those few, calculated moves that put you on top of them and could just pounce on them and flit back to the base victorious and filled with grim satisfaction.

I haven't felt with any other game

I know it sounds cheesy but I think anyone who truly loved the original Tribes can empathize.

When Tribes2 came around, there was something that was lost. I can never really put a finger on it but it wasn't there for me and I never really liked it as much, I only really played it for a few months and moved on.

I miss Tribes immensely, and don't know if any game will recapture what I loved about the tactics and strategies and calculations, the actions and reactions that became the game.

I've never played anything since that even came close to matching the enjoyment I got out of the hours I spent with friends just bouncing around in one on one duels perfecting fighting styles. The hours spent with my Tribe trying to come up with new tactics and different ways to utilize what we did best.

Long live Tribes!

The best gameplay i ever had was Delta force 1,2 (espceially landwarrior) games in clans. I played tribes 1 and 2 and didint think gameplay was that exceptional, however i wouldnt judge a game unless i have actually played it. Gameplay experience can be either an oppionion and very personal experience.

Sounds like for some of you T1 was your first love.

T1 was something special because it broke barriers. Enough with the "special feel" baloney, it did almost everything right, but it was "just another FPS" and took cues from everything that came before it.

You never get over your first love, but when it's history you should always try to anyway ;)

T2 tried to do the same all over again -- expand a genre -- and guess what, the fanboys didn't like it because it wasn't enough like their first love.

T:V isn't looking to break barriers, but they're certainly taking the Tribes game in a unique new direction. I say cut the developers some slack and see what they come-up with. If it sells, then there will be a Tribes 4 and at that point the slate is again clean ;)

In the meantime, if you don't like it, mod it.

Wow it's interesting, how those last 2 threads are juxtaposed! I agree with Alex that your opinions is always skewed in regards to your "first love". Nostalgia is a _very_ cloudy filter.

What's funny is that like Westy, Delta Force was my first online fps experience, and thus my 1st love. I mean I LOVED that game. I played it constantly, even joining a clan, and playing in tournaments. (Which I haven't done in any subsequent game.)

So recently, I was trying to explain to a buddy who had never played Delta Force how _awesome_ it was, with it's huge, open terrains, and great gameplay. So, I had him download a demo version we found on the internet, and I did the same. (My CD was long gone.)

And you know what? I started it up, and was completely unimpressed by what I saw! The graphics were HORRIBLE!!! And the gameplay was truly uninspired.

Now, before I get flamed, I am NOT saying T1 is the same. In fact, I've never played T1. (I have played T2.) I am simply saying I really feel sorry for T:V's devs. They not only have to make a game that can stand up next to T1 & T2, they have to make a game that can withstand everyone's _nostalgia_ of these games!

Thanks for the support, most of you. But I didnt neccessarily mean a better graphics engine (though that wouldnt hurt) But better physics, would help. I cant explain how I feel, but it doesnt feel good. It doesnt feel like tribes, and it hurts to imagine what a bomb in the series would do to the community.

Yea, I definitely feel everyone's pain about Tribal history. I too am a devout T1 man...

Everyone says the same thing, why not recreate T1 with better this and that? Has there been a team to attempt this with the Torque engine? I would help be apart of such a project.
