Framerate problems in the torque demo.

Im only getting about 21-40 fps in the torque demo.
800x600 32 opengl no FSAA or anything
athlon 1.2ghz 256meg/ radeon 9100 64 meg.
winxp pro sp1
updated to the latest radeon drivers, and no change.
I get slow speeds in A6 also.
but really high framerates in blitz3d
with 250k polys visible on screen I can stay above 70fps.
blitz uses dx7.
I realize im just throwing around graphics in B3d. and torque is doing alot more and therefore has more system overhead.
and I have no ideal of the tris count in the torque demo.
but it looks fairly low poly.
maybe my card is having problems with opengl and dx8.?

The Torque Demo has a lot of expensive fx features turned on. The features are turned on because we wanted the demo to look as good as possible, but still run with an average framerate of 30 fps or so on low-end systems such as the one you're using.
Of course, we could make the demo run faster by turning off some of the expensive demo effects, but then it wouldn't look as nice. Likewise, we could not worry about demo performance on lower-end cards and make the demo look even better. We chose a happy medium.
Comparing framerates in the Torque Demo vs a poly test in Blitz is pretty meaningless. :) Torque is extremely fast and reliable, has vastly more features than Blitz, and in most apples-to-apples comparisons would likely trump Blitz by a wide margin.
So, that's the general response. :)
I definitely don't think there are any problems with the radeon 9100 and OGL. I don't think your framerates are problematic, and if you ran the exact same demo in A6 or Blitz, I'd bet you'd see lower rates. Of course, I can be accused of bias, but this is my honest estimate.

Apologies that it took awhile for a response. Everything has been crazy around here in the past week. The Torque Demo has a lot of expensive fx features turned on. it just seemed slow next to my 1.6ghz athlon with the same video card.(78-135)fps there.
It seems to be this systems agp bus. , I cant get it to change from 2x. and cant change the wait states...
just a cheap motherboard..heh ya get what you pay for I guess...;)
Anyways, Ive since purchased Torque and am quite pleased with it.

Welcome aboard. Lots of fun code to play with now. Are you going to be working on a game, or just doing some learning/research? In any case, good luck, and feel free to ask questions.

For now im just messing around. (Got Kens book to help me along).
Ill start small and work up from there.
Ive been very close to a finished game a few times in other engines. but hit a wall I couldnt overcome. (Ussually network code)
In retrospect I probably should have gotten torque a long time ago.(ignoring the people who said...Torque is just to hard)
:)

have similar problems with many of the communities TGE game demo's too, but not many of the published ones except dark horizons.

I have similar problems with my Athlon 1200 Geforce3 (similar spec to Zmatrix) but a Nforce 1 chipset with the TSE demo. Interestingly the FPS doesn't change all that much no matter what setting the effects are on. In some instances the initial setting is the slowest.have similar problems with many of the communities TGE game demo's too, but not many of the published ones except dark horizons.

one is XP pro and one ME.
In resolution 1024x768 32 i get 37 fps on both.
Dont drop so much maybe 5 fps up and down.
