    Of course you can. You can either use the web irc interface or download an irc client. There are several good ones out there, both freeware and shareware. My personal favorite is Snak (shareware), since that and mIRC for Windows are very similar. Do a search on www.versiontracker.com to find some irc clients.

    If you want a free alternative to Snak, I've been using XChat Aqua for the last little while, and it works fine, and runs native in Aqua, so no need for X11 :)

    Yes, XChat is what I use. It is a very nice client.

    Otherwise, there is Ircle... cluttered interface, but it works.
