DTS/DIF Used for GUI Elements

Hello,
I have been wondering about something I thought I saw in a resource, but cannot find. Is there a resource for using DTS objects as GUI elements?
I thought about using them with DIFs in a mission that acts as a GUI. The mission would restrict movement and do the equivalent of a gllookat at the objects I use for the GUI.
Another completely different approach I thought of is using the GUI PlayerView (?) to view DTS (DIFs?) in the GUI and drag the playerviews around that encompass the object. Is the background of the Playerview opaque?
Either way would work, but I think the first one might take more work due to the GUI elements needing to be built. The whole point is I want the menu to be interesting and possibly animated with interesting 3D effects. This is intended for a childrens game and I want the kids to be excited by just the menu. The menu will also be modifiable so that the kids can "build" their own menu as they complete the different missions.
Mostly thinking out loud.
Thanks,
Frank
