TSE questions :)

by Chris Farley · in General Discussion · 04/25/2004 (2:01 pm) · 42 replies

I wanted to know if TSE will be its own game engine or something that goes with TGE to improve it.

Plz answer if you know.....

Thank you.

Sparky the moral of the story is as Jeff T. said

Quote:
Please do not hold off on buying TGE to wait for TSE

If you have no experiance in game development do not expect to start using shaders (which is what TSE adds to TGE) untill you fully understand how the engine works.

Alright thanks to everyone!

I will sometime in the extremely near future be the proud owner of TGE.

oh by the way, when you buy TGE do you download it or does it come via email?
also i dont have my own computer yet so i was wondering if, once i get the TGE i would be able to transfer it to another computer (my own; once i get it, of course)?

@Jeff, where is the dev. convention? i would like to go when its open.

thanks to the GG comunity! You guys rule and are a big help! I have an idea for a game and i cant wait to actually MAKE it!

You download Torque by using a source code control program called CVS. That way, you can always get the latest version.

IndieGamesCon is here in Eugene, October 8-10.

Thanks for the great comments.

I'm not a coder/scripter, just a 2D artist/writer, so I have no real need for the actual engine.

However, I do need a way to test the games I help make, so will a demo (or enhanced demo) to play off of be available, or will a game made with the expansion necessitate the TSE source and CVS access that comes with the license? I'm not masterfully conscious of such things, so forgive a possibly ludicrous question. A privately compiled demo that's independent of the original code may be easier at this point for all I know. Perhaps I'm just too used to letting RW service me.

Jeff is that date set in stone? If so I will change my vacation date. I think I scheduled for the week after guessing the approximate date of the Conference.

IGC date is set in stone. We have lined up some amazing speakers, and the event will be better than ever. Watch for the website to come up very soon.

As with the current TGE, the demo app will be modifiable, and compiled versions of all the tools will be available. Also, if you are a part of a team, it is legitimate for your coder to give you a compiled version of the game to work with. This will allow you to do scripting and artwork. So long as you do not have access to the source code, this is okay. There is no reason you should need such access to do art.

Jeff

Assuming that I had a game in development that ran perfectly on an unmodified version of the HEAD, could I not just drop the new TSE executables into the folder and go? Or are there some fundamental differences that will take some manual converting in a lot of the scripts?

WHat is CVS? Also would i absolutely NEEDCVS to download Torque?

@Gonzo - no, that would definitely not work. You'll have to do some porting. It will probably take a few hours of work.

@Chris - CVS is a version control system. It's not a big deal to get set up, there are docs that will walk you through it.

I'm wondering the same thing as Gonzo. If the code is unmodified and you're running almost everything from scripts in a fully functional game, won't that be enough?

Thanks Brian. A few hours work is no biggie. I think I could even tolerate a few days work if that's what it took. :-)

If you haven't bought the license yet, don't mind CVS.
Everything that is actually worth knowing is in there, trust me. Read it through, even a fool like me can understand it :P

H, I get the page that explains how to compile the engine with a link to the "How to use CVS" chapter, i.e. what you wanted. I'm not sure if you have to be a licensed Torque owner to view those pages, but on the other hand, if you're not a license owner, then CVS won't help you much, at least getting the engine.

Nevertheless, here's the link to CVS for MAC (and others):
