Torquedemo under debian

Im trying to install the demo under debian 3.0r2 and am getting the following error:
"The setup program seems to have failed on x86/glibc-2.1"
has anyone seen this before?

in as root (as opposed to su) it worked fine. now i just
have to get the demo to work with my lcd.
