For those with no money to buy Torque!

by Mark Barner · in General Discussion · 04/05/2004 (11:45 am) · 16 replies

I really didn't know where to post this. But recently I have gotten emails requesting me and so have others, to give them
copies of the SDK. Also read a few threads in the past weeks of people asking for copies or donations... NO!!! It only cost $100, which is a very low price for a game engine of this size. You can get a JOB to save up the $100 it cost to get Torque! Lots of us here are on tight budgets and have to scrounge up a few dollars to get what we need. Most of the software that people use with Torque is free. Do some research and see how much other engines are, you will find out that Torque is very cheap. Some suggestions on making extra money:
1. Get of your butt and find some work.
2. Mow lawns.
3. Go to your local grocery store and fill out an job application.
4. Babysit.
5. Ask relatives to for money on your birthday and xmas.
6. Be creative about making extra money(legally). This is important because it is the same creativity that makes good games.
Use free or low cost modeling software to make models and publish them on websites. Someone might like your models. They might buy them or hire you to make models for them.

When you finally do get Torque... make some games and try to sell them to make more money. Then you can buy more software.

People will not give you a copy of the sdk, that is a violation of the license agreement.

Very true. People are not going to give up their dream by breaking the License agreement. Besides It is $100. I know that it can sound like alot to a kid but hey that is the price of 2 new videogames. GG's is being very very generous with their price. Don't try to take advantage of them by stealing and/or begging SDK owners.

Heh - I've avoided picking up the SDK not because of money, but because of TIME. I know what a time sink it's gonna be when I finally get it and start digging in. Once I get my current project done, THEN I'm getting Torque.

BTW, if you are at all serious about making games, $100 might not be the least of your expenses, but it's unlikely to be even half of it! I've spent more than that in tools, business licesnes, and putting up a website... and that's going as cheap & open-source as possible.

@Jay: That's the problem I have is TIME. With a full time job and taking care of two daughters by myself... it is a time issue. But I have manage on all parts pretty good. The Torque is really a small amount compared to how much you want to spend on the tools. I have saved enough money up so that I can get gamespace and some other sofware at the end of the this month. I make a few extra dollars and put it away til I can get what I want. My daughters come first, sometimes it takes a while to save the money. In the mean time I use free and low cost tools. We are worrying about our game play more than the high quality graphics at this time. We can still get good graphics with Milkshape, Blender and Quark. To bad we couldn't save TIME!

This is another good quote that i felt strong about:

Look, I know this isn't what you guys want to hear and I agree with you about giving it away, but these people whould just go to a BT site and leave everyone else alone.

I do hope that all the people out there, who are unable to purchase torque, or anything, will still stay strong and work hard for what you believe in

...and if I could wish for anything, it would be World peace.

Oh, wait, sorry, thought this was a beauty pagent. Must have been that inspirational moment.

Seriously though. If the people asking for a copy of the SDK are too hard up to work or save to get the cash, how much do you think they will actually accomplish when they find the engine requires WORK to do anything? However, one way to disuade them would be to send them a link to the main GG website and tell them to download it from there. :) Don't make any judgement calls. Remember: "Today's outcasts are often tomorrow's criminals." "You know, if nobody claims that quote I am gonna." I like that quote too!

Can't these people download the demo, and learn scripting? I bought the game license also to get access to the inner forums. I am months away from looking at the sdk right now. I started with looking at realm wars to get a taste of what I might need to learn. That could be a positive answer for the people who claim not to be able to afford the license and still want to create something.

Where there's a will, there's a way, and when will's away, what do you have left?

Ooh, how's that for an aphorism?? lol

I agree with Rob, I bought the SDK for the private forums, the work I'm planning is mainly based on scripting.
In my view the upside of actually buying the SDK is to sponsor GG and if someone can't afford that, well, download the demo/Realm Wars.....

A tought tough, what are you allowed to release based on the Realm Wars ?? Since you basically can modify just about everything in there ....

I dunno about everyone else but this is how I feel.
$100 is jack-#$%t compared some other engines out there, but if we gave away Torque it would have little to no value.
Put $100 down, commit to making a great game. Knowing you've spent $100 your surely not to flake out so quickly and give up. $100 means that your serious. That's all, I honestly doubt the GG have made a fortune selling Torque licenses. But that's not what all this is about its about getting a proven engine into the hands of individuals again.

Ben, I simply meant that...if you got the engine by stealing it...how would you feel if people stole your stolen game. It is about karma, if that helps.

Anyone trying to get a "free" copy of TGE is a theif and deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law.

I recently had someone offer me a "free" copy of 3D Studio max. Needless to say, I turned it down.
