Windows XP User Switching problems

by Supra · in ThinkTanks · 03/10/2004 (3:22 pm) · 6 replies

My wife and i share a computer running windows xp home. The computer is brand new and we have 2 user accounts set up (logging on and off computer), to kepp email and files separate. When she logs in to hers or switches users from my account to hers, and then I log back in to mine and try and play think tanks, it has horrid performance. Screen freezes and mimics bad lag, but it has nothing to do with network connection, rather it appears to have video card problems.

Its not that big of a deal, but if she has switched users and I have to switch back, I have to reboot in order to play the game. Any advice or help?

If it's a video card issue I don't think there is anything we can do. Might be that the driver just isn't handling the user switch like it should. Have you tried updating the driver?

Outside chance it has something to do with file permissions, but if you are always playing when logged in to your own account that probably isn't the case.

If you do find that a driver update fixes the problem, be sure to send an email to us (support at bravetree dot com) so that we can log the issue.

@clark

Thanks so much for your quick reply! I really appreciate it. Question: if the machine is new, would the driver really be this issue? I am willing to check that out, and download what is necessary, but just thought that it would not need it.

I can check my specs to see what card it is using. I think it is ATI card with 64 or 128 of memory. Not sure the specifics on the card. Anyway, like i said, a reboot completely solves the problem and the game works flawlessly. But as soon as i logout, she logs on and off, and I log back in, its over for the game on my machine. It is unplayable. I will look into this more and post what i find here - if you think of any other ideas I will check here and see. Thanks again!

BTW: Great game guys! I love it! Thank you!

Yeah, definitely an issue still. XP ships with old NVidia drivers (don't even support OpenGL). Might not ship with the latest ATI drivers either.

BTW, can you also try another Torque game to see if it is more general than just ThinkTanks?

I had this exact problem with Orbz (another Torque-made-game). I updated the drivers and it began to work. Then, I started having problems with TT. Rolled back the drivers, and now both work.
Random glitchyness. That's windows for ya'.

OK - I updated the drivers. It was a Radeon 9600 graphics card. Seems to have corrected the problem with the logout/logon issue and the gameplay. I think i was using (as you said) the plug-n-play driver.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Score another one for the 'ol driver upgrade solution. :)
