Adult Content of v12 games on garagegames.com

I was wondering if there were a policy on this site concerning games with mature content such as nudity, extreme violence, and bad language. If I were to make a totally tasteless game, would it still get fair treatment as per the license states, as compared to say, a smurf game?
Please answer this, as it is a primary concern as to whether or not we will use this engine.
Thanx.

I don't think it would be breaking any rules, but I find it likely anyone would want it...

If your product would obtain the equivalent of Adult Only or AO on the ESRB ratings, then GG will not publish it. If it were a movie, and the rating required NC-17, then GG would not publish it.
Although we have stated that we will publish all games, it is always with the qualifier that the games must meet certain minimum requirements such as no adult content and a minimum number of bugs. Other than that, we will not be making content judgements.
Please don't start a long philosophical discussion about whether this is constitutional or morally right. It is a simple fact, and one that we feel strongly about. I'm sure there is a lot of money to be made in pornographic software, but we are not going to be the ones to make it.

We will not publish games that have extreme adult content such as nudity and pornography. If your purchasing decision for the engine is contingent upon GG allowing this type of product, then don't buy it.If your product would obtain the equivalent of Adult Only or AO on the ESRB ratings, then GG will not publish it. So a comparitive "r" rating of a movie would be ok then?

If you are really planning on pushing the envelope of what I just stated, then I would suggest you run your idea by us before you invest development effort.Jeff Tunnell GG

On the other hand would you publish games on the style of?
Silent Hill.
Blood
Quake 3 arena.
Resident Evil series.
Grand Theft Auto.
Leisure Suit Larry.
Mortal Kombat?
Twisted Metal Black
Soul Reaver
Conkers Bad Fur Day?
P.s. Im just asking out of curiosity =) (my game is as inocent as counter strike so far so no worries) but it would really be good to know at what point you say "NO WAY thats over the line" I once made a 2d duck shooting game where you used bazookas at some point (dont ask!)
and my publisher said I had to take off the color red out of the explosions because it looked a bit like blood (blue explosions? green?)

Hmm... I was wondering, if you have a RPG, and at some point, your character gets involved with a member of the opposite sex and get married/have sex (PG-13 love scenes nothing "dirty") would you publish it? is sexual innuendo ok?On the other hand would you publish games on the style of?

nudity is not extreme adult content.

It depends on the situation, though. I can't think of a lot of situations where nudity would be ok, except maybe if you were doing a Duke Nukem or Max Payne game and maybe there was a topless dancer or something . . . to be safe, stear clear of explicit nudity. It's a simple solution, and we all know that you can get incredibly racy without being that explicit. Just watch a music video . . .

It's like asking if you'll make box art for them or something... even more, why would you need nudity in a video game? That's pretty immature thinking unless you're targetting 12 years who's parents don't care what they look at.
I don't think i've ever seen a game use nudtiy and it be good... let's see...
Duke Nukem (uh, do I need to cover this one? pixelated strippers who you kill... way back before people bitched about video game violence) and D2 (i wont cover what it had, but it had a part that was removed sine it was so graphic)

This is pretty funny to see someone asking something like this before they even have any of their project done. It's like asking if you'll make box art for them or something... even more, why would you need nudity in a video game? 1: What kind of a moron would make a game without planning for all possible circumstances that may keep it from being published?
2: Are you psychic? How do you know that none of these people have any work done?
You seem to be right ab0out the 12 year old thing. Apparently you have no problem thinking like one.

I don't think Max Payne designers sat down and thought "If we don't get an M rating all is lost. We need to have sex and vulgarity. If we dont... we can kiss our jobs goodbye!"
My point was that planning a game around this is a rather strange approach.

Hey come on! Don't bring back old posts! lol, Jeff will get on my back about how I flamed someone months ago! noooo. Seriously. If you're designing a game with "Hey, lets have nudity and some naked chicks and uh some swearing!" as a "game design feature" then something is wrong.I don't think Max Payne designers sat down and thought "If we don't get an M rating all is lost. I am considering buying the engine now that the license arrangement has been changed so that publishing via garage games is not required. This seems very good value at $100 for a lone wolf developer who might only sell a few copies. I have the following questions regarding publishing any finished game :
1. Now the need to publish via GG is removed can the game content be up to the developer (e.g. violence GTA III style or nudity leisure suit larry style etc). If so where is this in the license agreement? I can't see it.
2. If I publish the game and want some end user editing (e.g. buildings, items in a level) can any of the tool(s)with the engine be distributed and used for doing this to save me building a custom editor(a big job!). Most games now come with some ability for the end user to customise it and extend the lifespan of the game.
Thanks,
Gwendy

2: Good question, I think the script editor is ok since it is part of the game engine itself, I don't know if the other tools like the 3ds exporter have seperate licenses or not. I dont remember seeing anything to that effect.

1:I assume that since you can distribute the product yourself that the content can be anything you want. GG will probably still want to avoid putting hardcore porn on their site tho.2: Good question, I think the script editor is ok since it is part of the game engine itself, I don't know if the other tools like the 3ds exporter have seperate licenses or not. You can make ANY game you want with the engine. If it is on your own site, you can publish any type of game.Jeff Tunnell GG
