Sci-Fi Alien Art Concepts

by Gary Simpson · in Artist Corner · 02/13/2004 (12:41 am) · 5 replies

Professional Concept Artist seeks critiques by other professional 3d modelers/2d artists. The background of the game is a sci-fi action game, wherein, the player character travels from planet to planet encountering native life. Presented are some of the proposed xenoforms with additional naturalistic background.

Additional pre-production alien concepts. I'll post up new iterations as well as angled shots next week.

Ah, yeah. There we go. This is the kind of game design I like to see. Something different, rather than a faggy army of heavily armed bipeds that are "so-called-aliens".

These are very organic- I personally take my alien concepts from plants, sea life and microscopic insects (everyday insects are too plain).

I think we will start seeing huge advances in what we deem as "alien" in the near future, especially with the release of HL2. Aliens should be alien, and leave me with the uncomfortable feeling of how to deal with them, and whether they are hostile and their immediate threat level. Most games simply miss that mark.

Nice artwork.

About your web site though; it is a little bit confusing. I probably missed a few pieces because you have to hunt around to find them. Also there's a small delay between when you roll over and they appear. I would suggest putting an outline or semi-transparent layer around/over the roll overs.

What adaptations do the Prinn have for arboreal life? They look like they would have a hard time handling mud, much less a vertical trunk.

Er, on a more basic level: what sort of critique are you looking for here? General technique and style, or how well these particular creatures meet their design criteria? (If the latter, then it would help to know what the design criteria are. Are they the naturalistic descriptions, or are those coming out of your head?)

Very cool, Gary.
