Speed searching the GG forums.

Ok, I do a lot of searching on various websites, and I came up with this trick to save some time. If you download and install the registry patch from the link, you will be able to search the Garage Games forums and resources right from your address bar without launching to the GG site first. For those that use an address bar on your Taskbar, this will really speed you up. I've submitted a little pic from each.
Registry Patch
Once you have installed the registry keys, you can search like this....
if you want to search the GG forums for the term "lighting", you just enter (WITHOUT QUOTES) "ggf lighting" into your address bar and bingo, you are there and searched before you could normally get to the site.

If you wanted to search the GG resources for mapping info, you would enter "ggr mapping" (without quotes) and presto, you are there.

Just remember, to get to the forums use "ggf" and for resources use "ggr" and always put a space between your prefix and your search term. I did this so I could spend more time working and learning, and less time screwing with links, shortcuts and favs, lol.
Enjoy
EDIT: Works on FireFox as well.

I would have, but resources have to be approved, and I thought everyone might like to have it right now. If GG would like, it could be put in the resources later. And Thanks!!!

Pretty slick - please put it in the resources, too. Forum threads can be very ephemeral, and this shouldn't be lost. ;)

It's there. Just noticed it's approval.

Any idea how to add something like this to Firebird/Firefox?

Do you happen to know if there's a way to do this to interface the windows indexing service? (For searching the source code). Or even better, is there something better than the indexing service for searching the source code? :)

If google can text search the internet, why can't GG search their own site?

This would be REALLY useful if GG would add searching IN THE PAGES! ;)

Cameron, it has to do with server processing resources. If Rick were to add full blown text searching to GarageGames's site then it would lag the server which in turn make loading webpages very slow. You also have to note that Google has over 5,000 networked servers processing those search queries and providing the results. GG only has one or two servers that I know of.

Well I dont know how much it could help, but I know I can find everything I've ever needed by using this.

Nathan, it really has more to do with database and (php, coldfusion, or cgi design) design. Hardware costs are minimal nowdays. Anyway, I know they are working on it, and I am not them. I don't know their perdicament. I am just stating that I would find it VERY useful ;)

The general way in Firefox is to add a bookmark and edit it. Do a search, bookmark the results, edit the properties for the bookmark, change the search term to %s and add a keyword.
examp: search for Resources lighting will get you to:
bookmark this, edit properties and change lighting to %s in the location box:
and add ggr (or what ever) in the keyword box.
You can do the same for forum, news, etc. searchs. The use is the same as Gonzo describes for IE.
Note that you don't have to have a %s to add a keyword. Ex: If I type gg in the location bar, I get to my favorite GarageGames starting page.

Dirk, I've updated the links, they should stay permanant. As long as you can see the pics, you can get the file.
