v12 cd's.

by Chris "Dark" Evans · in Torque Game Engine · 09/02/2001 (5:30 am) · 11 replies

I just realized I haven't gotten the cd in the mail yet. It says "Not all items shipped" on my purchases page. I ordered it on Aug 14th.

Do you know when you'll ship the cd's? And is there anything on there that wasn't included in the download?

It's a long story :) The CD is basically ready to go. We've been going back and forth on some replication logistics and silk-screening, but now we're simply going to burn them ourselves to get the ball rolling. We we're going to start shipping them last week, but another issue has popped up which is will probably delay the CD's until the end of this week. There will be an announcement on this "issue" within the next day or so, soon as we sort it out. It's kind of lame, but not much we can do about it...

Anyway, the CD SDK is the same version as the download, except that it also includes all the 3rd party software you may need to get setup. It includes the following:

- SDK Version 1.0
- Latest dOxygen doco
- DirectX 8
- VC6 Service Pack 5
- CW6 Patch
- GNU Utilities for Win32
- NASM
- GLSetup
- WinCVS
- WorldCraft (3.3?)

If you've already downloaded the SDK and setup your environment, then the CD may not be that useful to you. Since this initial run won't have the nice silk-screened logo on it, it won't be much of a souvenir item either :( On a last note, those of you that have signed up for the CD won't be charged until it ships. You can, of course, cancel the order if you wish.

Hi Tim,

What will happen when the new version of the engine is available? Will those who received the burned CD get the silk-screened copy? Or will we have to re-order and pay again? If so, I'll probably cancel and wait since I have already downloaded most of what will be on this CD.

Thanks,
David

I'm not sure when we'll get the silk-screened version done. Our big concern right now is getting CD's out to those who need it. A number of people are having problems downloading the SDK over their modems, and we'd like to get those developers up and running. We would not re-ship CD's though, if you order and recieve one now, that would be it.

I guess the next logical question, then, is how much are we going to pay for 'updated' cds? Is it going to be $12 a pop for a cd? I mean, I have no need for what's on this cd, except the dOxygen docs... which I'd gladly download if it was made available. I'd rather wait until the second rev, with the demo and the 'full' system (sound, projectile code, etc).

So, how do I go about 'opting out' on the first rev cd? And will you be making the docs available to those of us that don't want to buy a cd just for the docs? I know bandwidth is probably the issue, so why not post them to alt.binaries.v12 or something? Just chunk it up and post it (:

Heck, talk to the guys at GameDev website, maybe they'll set up an area for ya (:

The GameDev guys are just about out of business due to bandwidth issues, so the doco will be HTML. The CD was never presented as anything more than a hard copy back up of the original download with a few "extras" included. You can't expect more than that for a mere $12.

You can easily cancel your CD order. Your credit card has not been charged, and will not be until the CD goes out.

Hi Tim and Jeff,

Thanks.

Is GG planning on making pressed CDs available again after every few revs of the engine? Seems that would be expensive and trouble-some on your end. This first version would have "collectors" value as Tim mentioned, so the silk-screening would be nice, and I would wait for that one for that reason alone.

Will all later CDs then be burned on demand? IMHO this is probably best for you guys. I would be more than willing to pay the $12 for future burns on major engine and docs revisions. If revs occur frequently, pressed discs are going to cause you financial hassles if they don't all sell.

Speaking of silk-screened logos (well not exactly...) but did anyone else notice that the GG logo is small-g-large-G while the web page titles are large-G-small-g.

What is the total current Docs file size when zipped? HTML usually squeezes up nicely.
I am running my own server hardware etc. here, if the file isn't too large (eg: less than 1GB ) I would be willing to host it or mirror it.
Just a suggestion: perhaps if GG, myself, and V12DocRepos all mirrored with throttled bandwidth or limited simultaneous connections, it may be a method for distribution and keep the bandwidth under control across the servers.

Feel free to email me privately if this is a consideration.

Thanks,
David

Please understand, I don't have a problem with the CD as it is, except, like someone mentioned, as a collectors item alone... which is why I'd prefer to wait for a silk-screened cd.

And the rest of my question was what was just asked, whether there will be more cd's, and what the cost for each will be.

Probably didn't state it very well (:

... unless the non-silk-screened cd is signed by you guys (:

Actually, I don't think we had planned on shipping more than one CD per developer... I think the idea is that once a developer has a copy of the SDK, they would update it either through the patches we make available, or through the CVS server. Eventually I believe that CVS will be the prefered method of keeping up to date on the source.

Hi Tim,

Sorry to harp on the subject...
If I would prefer the silk-screened, should I cancel now and re-order later, or can the "shipping dept" make note of this for me?
I don't mind waiting, or if I had to purchase both, like the others I am interested only for the collectors reasons.

Thanks,
David

The shipping is semi-automated... and there isn't any way to mark an order for later shipping. You'd have to cancel your current order and place it again later when the silk-screening is done. Silk-screening is not a high priority for us right now, so it may be a while. (We'll get it eventually though.)
