Simple Game Idea

by Christian Weber · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 01/27/2004 (8:02 am) · 17 replies

Hi all,

I wrote a little design document for a little game called "Gladiator - Fight for Life". It should be a simple Sword Fighting Game, where you can have your own Gladiator with a few skills. You can download the doc here: www.uwserver.de/Gladiator.doc I know there are several mistakes, but it's not my native language, normally I write those things in german.

Thanks,
Chris

@Christian: Not bad, it's a nice idea, and you should roll with it. As an idea for ya, why not use a UI that looks like roman architecture? It would fit the theme of the game quite nicely.

The only thing about the design doc is that it still needs fleshing out, but it is the first version, as you said. It would benefit from more business-like writing(avoid becoming too personal), and avoid saying "u" instead of "you", but if the only thing I'm critiquing is the spelling, you've got a nice idea ;)

Dunno about the bows though, seems a bit unfair to shoot a gladiator from across the arena like that. And the game would definitely benefit from exotic locales(Rome wasn't the only gladiator arena), and historical facts(which it looks like you've got knowlege of).

Flesh it out and roll with it is what I say.

Ok thanks, I already noticed the thing with the "u" and "you". ;) First I wrote it everywhere... I thought that I had found every "u" ;) I hope that I have fixed everything.

Yes the UI would look great with a little roman architecture touch. :) I will add this later.

Well bows and crossbows were used in arenas, especially for events like a roleplay (historical fights for example). I don't think that they will cause a balance inequality, because if you are good u can still block them with your shield.

I dont think that it will be hard to find also other places where gladiators fought. ;)

Thanks for your feedback.

Ok I created also a project page(www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=project&page=view.project&qid=2455), I will add a few jobs too. I cant handle this alone, I also have to finish another project at the moment. Maybe I should take this on later or maybe I can get a team together for making this game. But first I have to flesh it out like you said. Of course I will setup a cvs server for this project too.

Thanks,
Chris

If you're one of the main members on the team for the other project, you should definetly finish that first.

If you're just submitting a few pieces of art or source code or whatever for the other project, you can probably work on both.

I'm making a few simple graphics for the other project, but what I primary do is to organize everything there.

Mhm looks good, but it has a bit too much magic and monsters in it for me. I want more "real" (no monsters/magic/or other mythic things).

I have looked the DDP over and must say that if you take this setting;

Rune; Colliseum Map, Bleed to death Mutator, Bow-Crossbow Mutator, and either uses Free For All or Team Death Match you have what you describes. And that is with skeleton animated models having app. 16.000 different animation combos.

Rune ON!

Hey I like ancient arena fighting. Good idea. If you want some historically correct things for the arena check out some of the history type shows made for it. One is how the arena was shaded using a canopy. Another talked about how the colloseum in Rome was actually floaded with water to recreate a sea battle! Lots of cool things to look into for just the colloseum in Rome.

Good luck,
Frnak

Pretty much *EVERY* game has been done before in one way or another these days. If you only do games that have never been done before, the chances are you'll never make a game.

I played a game years ago that had a unique system I'd like to see back in something like this. The weapon is controlled by the mouse, when you move the mouse, left in a circular motion, the sword moves in that motion.
It give the ability to actually sword fight in game.

Lee, that game you're referring to is Die By The Sword. It wasn't a huge success, although they spent a lot of money making it. The concept was pretty good I thought, and if you had enough patience you could become very good at fighting. I liked it, but many didn't. Reason being the failure of Die By The Sword. I doubt you'll see a fighting system like that in big multiplayer games, as it's highly dependant on good ping times.

The overall problem though is the average gamer doesn't have the patience to get good at something like this, unless it's easy to learn, and point and click to shoot or hit x button to swing your sword will always be easier :(

Aaanyway, I saw a snapshot the other day of someone's project using Torque where they said they had made better controls than Die By The Sword but similar, I'll dig it up.. Think they had implemented IK.. Here we go: http://www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=775

Just an FYI...a fellow community member, Omroth, is in the process of making a sword game with *real* control over the sword when you fight. Check the Development Snapshots and you will see his posting.

I think there's a game called Shadow of Rome. (it may not be out yet) I saw it at E3. It looks really violent and fun.

Good luck competing with that game cuz you can use all sorts of weapons. Plus, they have a little bit of stealth too.
