Want to document game's development..

I am a student who is searching for an established company or project that would be willing to "open up" for a set of articles based on indy game development. I am interested in getting to know staff members, learning about the development process, and taking part in all aspects of a independent game's development.

Concerns that I have received from various development teams usually pertain to the confidentiality of game content. I can guarantee that nothing will be written about anything that the company does not want exposed. I am doing this for my own benefit as well as for a school project. While the project has a due date I would still be interested in following a game until its final completion and release.

I understand that this is a lot to ask for, and so I would be willing to provide any services that I can perform. I am a Microsoft-oriented web developer and have knowledge of HTML, ASP, VB, and Java. The documentary articles can also be published by a website for game exposure and fanbase expansion. I would only do this if the company approves. It would be ideal for me if the company had an IRC chat room where staff members are open for discussion. I do not want to alter any part of the process in order to incorporate myself, so it would be ideal if the company already had something like this in place. I also find it easier to communicate through a system like IRC rather than email interviews. It allows me to explore the process more as well as getting to know more of the staff members.

The ideal game for documentation would be a RPG with a medieval theme. I would prefer this because if I am going to document a game's development, I would need to be interested in it. It should be a fairly large project. Also, if you are developing a MMORPG, it must be well-established. I intend to do a serious documentation, and I cannot afford to affiliate with a new company that has the chanmce of falling apart after a month or so.

Let me state again that I do not want to intrude on anyone's project. The company gets final say on what goes into the article, and they must approve of it before it gets published. If you would like me to document your game's development for the gaming community, please send an email to webmaster@reconproject.com. I will check this topic repeatedly if you wish to post any questions.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Surely a medieval RPG isn't the only thing that interests you... ;)

    Best of luck to you.

    Hah.

Well, an RPG would center around the aspects of development that I want to study. I'm also a big fan of Medieval lore and stories. Like I said, it is a personal preference and not a restriction. If you are developing any genre of game and you are interested in having your development documented, then let me know.

When I think about it, I would also enjoy following a FPS. These are the games I love to play and would like to study.

Also, let me restate that I am going to choose an established company, because I cannot afford to follow a game that will be dropped after a few months. Keep the responses coming.

Oddly enough, I am working on an RPG that is "medieval" (it's actually placed in the future, but it's a future that's essentially medieval).

Fletcher Games is an "established" company in that it has already created a game, but it is also kind of "ghetto" established in that the game that's already done hasn't had many sales yet. It's had some, just not enough to be worth thinking about. The issue here is that I want to get some things moving along before I start doing real advertising. I've done some free "advertising", but that's not particularly effective.

Everyone on the development team has another job or is in some sort of school or whatever. We're not Id Software.

The RPG itself isn't too far along. The "learn-how-to-play" area is scripted, and the first town is mostly scripted, though the sewers aren't there yet. All the art is temporary placeholder art. Most of the music that's "done" isn't really finished (at least, that's what the musician tells me). All of the programming for the "core" of the game is done, but there's ALOT of "minor" things that need done.

We do NOT have an IRC channel. However, we do have a bulletin board on our website. The problem with that is that some of the team members are unwilling to post there for some reason. As such, I spend alot of my time telling people things that other people said.

I should warn you that Indy game development is far from glamorous. Or, at least, it's not glamorous the way I do it.

I don't know how much help I can offer you. But if you're interested, go to http://www.fletchergames.com and check it out. Hopefully though, you can find someone who can offer you more info. Maybe you could get one of the teams who did one of the games published by GG to help you.

I assure you that Mythale RPG will eventually be finished, though possibly not by the end of Summer 2004 (which is what it says on the website).

We are not working on an RPG, but I certainly would not mind having our game development documented.

Joe, I think it would be helpful to him if you provided some details about your project. That way, if several people offer to help him out, he'll have some way to choose between them.

    @ Steve,

I would be perfectly fine with him choosing someone else. I figured if he was interested in learning more about us he could look in my profile, do some reseach, and make his decision accordingly.
