Next Rev of the engine?

by Edward Gardner · in Torque Game Engine · 08/30/2001 (6:49 am) · 10 replies

Now, don't get me wrong. I am having a blast, making serious progress, and am PSYKED about the community and GG support we get.

Just wondering if you'll share a little of the timetable with us (or have I missed the thread somewhere?), specifically (cause I am selfish) what's on the plate between now and November 5th? 1 rev, 2 revs, no revs?

Just trying to plan my life :)

Also, what kinds of things from the community additions (hud additions, camera stuff, compass classes, etc) will you be incorporating on the next release?

I assume that eventually, you'll have a CVS for us to play in, but I thought I heard that the next release would be pre-CVS.

Back to my coffee :)

We're a few weeks away from the next release. We're just starting now on the demo, which will basically be a example death-match game, and we'll probably release the latest engine changes at the same time as the demo. Besides bug fixes, the next release will center around the demo, which will be a working example game. It will include a working weapon, projectile, basic scoring, etc.

The new CVS server is up. We have a few people testing, but we won't open it up to all developers until we get our new server machine running. Right now everything is hosted on one machine, which is feeling the strain. Rick's squeezing in the new hardware setup with his work on the sounds system. Not sure what the eta is on that, priorities seem to fluctuate :)

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the updated ETA.

I hope there won't be any major changes to the engine, as many people (like me) have already started some major scripting and development. :-)

Thanks,

Will the audio be fixed with that release, Tim?

I doubt we'll have time to get some vehicles in, we'll see. On compatibility with current mods/huds code... it depends on what they've changed. I'd expect all the gui controls to just run though, unless they've integrated them directly in with the player code or something.

Once everyone is setup with CVS, developers will be able to test out their mods with the latest and greatest before it actually releases. This should help make releases smoother for everyone.

I think vehicles should be included :)

I would wait a few weeks extra if it meant we could have some well executed (and documented) vehicles.

If the ground vehicles do not run better than in Tribes 2, then my horse is going to be flipping like a yoyo

Many people are working on sanitized vehicle scripts, I'd actually like to see a more full featured demo, sound code, and some of the other stuff I have been reading about :)

My nickel :)

Even if the vehicle code isn't fine tuned in this next release, you can rest assured that it will be fixed sometime in the near future by either GG.com employees or the members of the community that have been chugging away at this... There's no real reason to "delay" the offical release of the next engine revision for vehicle code... soon enough we'll be able to just use CVS for updates anyway... Personally, I'm looking forward to CVS more than working sound code.. i just play mp3s when I play games anyway ;)
