Audacity is good if you're a programmer (like me) as opposed to some sound/music guy. It's free from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/index.php?lang=en .

There's certainly better editting software, but I don't know anything about editting sound anyways. :)

There's been several threads about this topic in this forum, so you might want to look for them.

If you're an Apple fan, they just announced a new software called GarageBand (comes with all new macs after Jan. 16). Looks _really_ impressive. I almost want to go buy a Mac just to use it. And the name fits rather well with this site :)

Hey someone,

Yeah, I would agree that GarageBand is a good place to start, if you have an Apple. A good place to start on PC is something from one of the "CakeWalk" products such as this:

http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/HomeStudio/default.asp

Or, alternatively, drop me an email at jseguin@seguinsound.com and I could do some music for you for FREE. I am a trained musician (University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, B.M, '02) who is just getting into doing game music so I am offering to score titles with ORIGINAL music for FREE.

Check out my website for some samples:

Either way -- good luck with your project!

Hello John, I've listened to your demos... cool works, really :) *thumbs up*

If you ever come to Italy, would you have a jam session with us in our studio? we'll have fun!

Hi all first time poster here :)
greeting to you all from Wales in the UK

Sound ....ok im looking for software..free or to purchase that can do voice, so for example if i record a command for my character, i want to change the voice command to something a bit more game specific , so basically i dont want it to sound like my voice..hahaha....

thanks in advance :)

Find a voice actor.

There are a lot of sound manipulations you can do to a voice, but unless you know intimately what you're doing, it will sound manipulated. If that's what you're going for, then cool. If you're hoping for a quick-fix to your own voice without extensive sound experience and a good ear, it's much, much easier to buy a good microphone and find a voice actor.

Record as clean as possible and then degrade as necessary.

Well... it's not so cool to have more "voice variations" from the same source. Better to find more actors with more different specific voices.

There are many that could work for free, trying to build up a good resume... happy hunting! ;)

For music, I'll give it a go for free (just a thanks and proper crediting) for you. I need to practice making music to video, so I get something out of it no matter what. just email me:

That all depends on what kind of sound your trying to create. What is your project about? If you need techno, I wouldn't purchase something that revolves around horns and vice versa. The best scenario for you would be to either hire someone to create audio content for your project or to have someone do it for FREE :p

I suggest fruityloops(for loops and arangements), reason(for loops), soundForge(for processing) and nero wave editor(for hiss removal)
try reverb and chorus of fruityloops instead of soundforge. i found it better.
