Free Software Downloads

I was wondering where I could get 100% free art software(like Adobe Photoshop), 3D Modeling Software(like 3D Studio MAX), sound editing software(like Cakewalk), and any other software that would be good for video game production. I'm also looking for tutorials and things along those lines to help me learn to create the kind of software I'm looking for that way I can just create the tools and software that I need to use for my video games. Well documented source code and tutorials would be very helpful. Thanks for any and all help that you can provide to me and the others like me:).

PS-I know that it takes several years to make good quality software so don't tell me that. I know what I'm getting into, I've done the research, but couldn't find any helpful source code, tutorials, sites, or anything like that.

I've used Blender before and like it. I was just checking to make sure that there wasn't any other 3D modeling software that people prefered to use that was completely free. I've looked at the ACID XPress web site and have ran into one minor problem: ACID XPress is for Windows 98/Ne/2000, I use a computer with Windows 95. I haven't looked into Gimp's web site yet, but I hear it is a good art software. Now my only last three questions are: Where do I find 100% free sound effect/special effect editing software? Where do I get 100% free software for editing voice overs(like Pro Edit Tools) that allows me to edit the voices pitch, length of the dialog, and things like that? And finally: Where do I get tutorials on how to create this software so I don't have to go looking for what I need and instead I can build what I need for my video games (I'm also looking for well documented source code to look at to see how different parts and code works to get the effects)? Thanks for any and all help you can offer me:).--Clayton Weaver

On the 3D modeling side I know Carrara and Amapi. Amapi 5 or 6 are free (www.eovia3d.net probably has them). Carrara is at version 4, has been for a while. Version 3 is $79 or close. Legitimate copies, inventory blowout. Only until they're gone. I'm working with Purplus on this one.
Talking about Purplus, they also carry a variety of sound tools and sound editing software. I'm no expert at that though.
Check for other freeware, shareware anmd affordableware: http://www.thebest3d.com

For image editing and particularly painting I recommend our own: Project Dogwaffle 1.,2 which is freeware or the affordable commercial versions if you want more features and power. But already the freeware 1.2 version has fractal particle brushes for great foliage fx and making textures you can really use in game art as background, animated sprites...On the 3D modeling side I know Carrara and Amapi. For a good Photoshop alternative, I use Gimp (or, if you can't get used to gimp's interface, try "GimpShop"). For 3d, I use Blender and for basic audio stuff, I use Audacity. They are all free and google will hook you up.edit: spelling

discontinued, but you might find it somewhere. I think Softimage also have a rather large, but free
download of a similar tool.
There are some nice landscape-related tools here:
http://www.geomantics.com/downloads.htm
I have Genesis II, which isn't available anymore, but could be used license-free.
PlantStudio is now free:
http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/download.htm
Dig around the site to find the license key.
Very useful tool to create some diversity in scenery.

There used to be GMax, (completely free) character modelling tool based on 3DS Max. It was to bediscontinued, but you might find it somewhere. I think Softimage also have a rather large, but free
download of a similar tool.

Sonic Foundry's ACID XPress (the free version of their ACID series of audio software products) is a pretty good multi track audio mixer. I use one of the commercial versions, and I've always been very pleased with it (although I've been tempted to try Fruity Loops lately).
