Who is your nemesis? (Scrum)

by Sniper · in ThinkTanks · 12/31/2003 (7:36 am) · 17 replies

I've been playing scrum fairly heavily for about three months and i have noticed a few things.

First off, there are some really great players out there and it's a blast to get 8 or 10 of you guys together on some team scum. ( Regular scrum is not as fun when everyone is good.)

While playing in some of these game I've also noticed that there are some players who play very similar to me and if we are on the same team, we tend to run all over each other, always reading the play the same way and both trying to be in the same spot, slamming in to each other just as the other team goes between us to score.

I've also noticed that there are definitely some players that can become a bit of a nemesis when they are on the other team. Not in an unfriendly way, just that they again, always seem to be where you are when you want to be there.

Some former nemesii (sp?) I've learned how to play around, whether they are on my team or the other.. some I still can't get a handle on and i consider to be on my current nemesis list.

Again I use the term nemesis, not is some personal adversarial way, just as a term for players who give you an unpredictable amount of trouble when they are on the other team.

Former nemesis - - I can adapt to these guys now...

If you are not on the list, it doesn't mean I don't think you are aren't good or bad it just means that our style of gameplay meshes a little cleaner than these guys (and gal.)

So who's your nemesis?

The good players are those that can start in front of you and time it jsut right to check you and steal the scrum. I have been able to stop this, but I am unable to do it myself.

Some of my favorite people to play with are:

Tally Ho
Gnomie

I usualyl have one good game, then I start getting silly. Jsut having fun running around in my wee little tank

The way games go is constantly changing for me. sometimes I can beat the best of the best easily, sometimes I get beaten to within an inch of my life, and sometimes i tie. it never stays the same from game to game.

I have no particular nemesis. Just the people everyone knows are good at scrum.

@Vanbuskirk - I'm touched, thanks - funnily enough, you and Tally would both rank very high on my list too if I had one, but I don't see enough of either of you at the moment.

LMAO, 44. I just finished reading this thread when I realized there was another post. Perfect timing as usual.

@Sniper,

Never thought you had a handle on me, but apparently you think you do. Individually, only two players have and always will give me fits - FP and #1Tankster, my teammates for the 3 on 3 tourney. It really is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tank with those two.

Throw in some good blocking, and I would have to put MajorPain, Baby Clax, and Burnsie at the top of my list - although I have been picked off more than my fair share by Tally, Hugo, and 56k LagMan.

Team scrum has been rendered a defensive game now by the select few who never chase the scrum, so on any given night there can be a different hero or nemesis. In any case, I certainly have noticed your stellar rise in the scrumming ranks.

This will require thought in order to make a post more than just the usual suspects. I shall post.

Well Tanky's skill & bravado put him at the top of my list. He's consistently a tough competitor & just has a way of getting under my skin. Smug bastard.

There are a few other players who also have caused damage to my wasd keys, most notably: FP!!, Jangy, Tally, Az, Laggy, TankGirl,Perdurabo, Breaka, Burnsie, Cadc in his flying frisbee (I hate that thing!)... Well there are more. Maybe I'll put together a more thorough list at some point.

I'd have to say that Tankster has become my #1 hit list

I wouldnt call this player my Nemesis but more like 'the most improved player'. A real stand out.

I cant believe how far this player has excelled since the 'good ole days' (ya right this game is only 9mo old)

I started out as DeathStyle and considered are skills somewhat equal. But no longer is the case for me.

He has an original style. A real master of the reverse mode.(next to FP)

And the award goes to MajorPain! :D

@ Prey
My game rides high and low with my mental status. Iron walls to egg shells. When I'm good, everyone else is neck deep in quicksand. When I'm bad, I can't really play team; I'm a total f*cking disaster.

@ Sniper,
Thanks for putting me on the list, I am honored. BUT YooDooRight and TankGirl are not the same person.

YDR has a penis....I do not. YDR is really good though. I have only played with him a few times and he probably deserves to be on the list. He told me a few weeks ago that he was stopping for a while to play HALO which finally came out on the mac. I have not seen him since then.

Anyway, thanks again. a girl likes to get a little recognition.

Also i always got a little tick when some noob came into scrum and wipe the floor with me. I was like "DAM i thought i was good" :( "i guess i need to play another 10 hours to improve my game" .

Jangles,

You still score on me way too much, i don't have a handle on you but I do change the way I play when you are on the other team.

MajorPain is my nemesis.

I agree that he is the most-improved player of the group. I remember when he couldn't get anything right...very funny. Now he is one of the most difficult players to beat. Yes MP, I still beat you most of the time (I keep track) but I can tell the tables are turning. You will be giving #1Tankster some real trouble and could even knock him off the throne.

So, MP, you are a joy to play with even though you are starting to pi$$ me off :-)

I am learning some new moves from you now, but I will NEVER embrace that running away from the goal thing you do. Makes me scream at you.

You did cause me to pull out the old Nostromo 50 controller so I can try to find a way to outmaneuver you.

The best compliment you can give another player is that they make you a better player as well. so consider yourself complimented!

Cya in the games MP :-)

@IMP, & TG

Thank you all for the compliments! I do feel I've learned a lot by watching the more skilled TT'ers game & integrated various styles into my own playbook.

I would certainly echo Tally's sentiment that mental state does have some bearing on the game. Sometimes I feel that I'm in the zone & can make difficult moves with ease & other times I just plain stink & it probably appears that I'm going out of my way to give up the scrum. The bad one's sometimes make me want to quit altogether but they're fewer than they used to be...

Hehe the running away thing does seem to annoy people, but it does work. I only employ that method when there's a concentration of tanks near the goal & I'm smokin. On a few occasions I've been able to draw those folks away from the goal & hit a boost arrow at the right time & scored. Really cool when it works, annoying when it doesn't... At the very least it puts distance between the scrum & the goal so when I do expire & spawn in BFE I have a chance of still scoring the point.

See ya in the pit...
