A message from Mr. Different

by The Brain (SA) · in ThinkTanks · 12/27/2003 (8:33 am) · 20 replies

Being the person who didn't fit in with others much for most of my life, I am now trying to keep track of what people think about me.

Often, when i sit and think, my train of thought leads to a memory of one of the many embarassing moments in my life. I end up feeling really bad about myself and thinking "I don't deserve this kind of life!"

Anyhoo I was wonding what you, the people of the TT community, think of me. Am I what you consider to be "cool" or just some guy who plays thinktanks. Be honest. And please make the post last longer than 1 sentence.

Thankyou,
The Brain

You are probably suffering from depression and should see a doctor - I am not joking.

The doc will probably suggest you try taking something like Prozac/Fluoxetine - these are serotonin boosters that, appropriately enough, make your brain work a bit more smoothly. They take a couple of weeks to kick in, but once they do they work well for most people. Some people say that rather than take drugs you should run around and get lots of exercise - that boosts serotonin levels too.

Whatever - get some help, don't sit around brooding - you really don't deserve that sort of life. And don't worry, most people get depressed from time to time - the trick is to find a way out of it that works for you.

Brain,

Don't feel this way. Remember that your family loves you, no matter what embarassing moments you've had. Just ask them - they'll be honest with you. Unlike stock brokers (in case you didn't notice, I just lost a lotta money on stocks)!

Lol, I like that quote.

Brain brother, it always is an privilege not to fit - it's the proof that you're an individual. It's way more challenging, but perhaps you were a lemning before in other lives, but after WW1 and WW2 you decided to try something different.

Bear in mind we just crossed the winter solstice, where the days are short and the weather ominous. It's not a good time to think too much about all that's wrong.

In any event, incarnation on Earth is a bitch.
The old vedic texts (the Cosmogonic Vedas, circa 3000 bc) say our planet is on the 4th plane of evolution, so about 50% hell and 50% paradise (planets of lower planes are increasingly worst, while the higher planes lead to the celestial 'seventh sky' of everlasting life and absolute bliss, re. the abode of Vishnou and Brahma, etc.)
Hellish 1 - 2 - 3 - Earth (4) - 5 - 6 - 7 Heavenly
So we're not TOO bad off I guess, folks. Jeez, we even have thinkTanks to amuse ourselves.

Manicheism as well is saying our dimension is perfectly balanced between 50% good and 50% evil.

Well good luck with your struggle. It's everyone's struggle.
Hugobrain

PS Gnomie, the problem with Prozac is that it kills your libido, plus apparently leads to long term brain damage. Pacsil was removed from the British market because it leads to suicidal thoughts...

Yes Hugo's right, everyone fails to fit more or less, don't worry about it. And I am in no way qualified to recommend Prozac or anything else.

I do know from bitter experience that for some people, brooding can turn into a steep downward spiral if it goes on long enough, and the brain loses the capacity to find its own way out. At that point you can call it clinical depression, and seek help. There are painless ways out, however bad it feels. And apparently it's all to do with how much serotonin gets reabsorbed when a brainwave crosses a synapse. We are chemistry.

Hey, I don't feel THAT bad about it! Just wanting to know what you guys think of me. I'll admit that in the past I have felt a bit depressed but nowadays its not so bad.

I just wanna find out two things:

1. Am I "cool" in the ThinkTanks community?
and
2. If not what can I do about it?

The first post made me seem like someone who was depressed enough for serious counselling. Maybe I should stop exagerating. Or figure out how to put what I think into words.

Brain, the first thing that came to mind when reading your post is: This guy has balls to open up like that. Most guys want to be cool and would never expose their insecurities that way.

Now, I don't know you well and I won't play the shrink here, but I think that 44 is giving you the best advice. Do not base your self esteem on what people think of you. Being part of the "cool" bunch is not the answer and you will lose your identity just to be mainstream.

Believe in yourself enough to dare to be different. Start being proud of what makes you different.

It's fun to be different! You turn heads! You catch people's attention! Have chutzpah and have fun!

Everyone has embarassing moments. And just because you don't always fit in doesn't mean you never will at all!

[putting arm around shoulder and gesturing with other arm at surroundings]

"There's six billion people out there, Brain, they can't all hate you!"

And with that,

Sincerely yours,

* the Shrink

P.S. I don't know you very well, but you seem like a cool guy. Unless they spit in your face, presume that everyone likes you!

Brain, if you want me to be your friend, you better pass me the scrum more often in Team Scrum, especially when you're on the other team.
